how much do build this to a stocker??
I have a 1982 malibu wagon classic(similar to jody langs wagon)..right now it just has a bracket motor small block in it with a glide...im looking to transfer it to a stocker...everything is there such as headlights, all interior etc...
not sure of the best combo for this car( 305 or 350??) it doesnt have to be the fastest in class, im just not sure of everything i need besides...a motor, metric trans, rear end gears.. what else do i need?? how much can i do this for?? thanks-colton |
Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
A friend of mine runs stock and I asked him what it would take to switch my car over to stock, he told me to fill my trailer completely up with cash and I'd be about ready..........
PS..The trailer is a 44 footer  |
Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
Whenever I build a racecar, I estimate the final cost and present it to my wife and she always says, "Add a thousand". I'm always wrong and she's always right. So listen to the words of a wise woman. I don't know what it's going to cost to build your car, but my wife might. Danny

and Im not saying this to be a smart -ss. |
Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
i was planning on doing that..just to make sure i do everything right...so about 5000 for a motor, 2000 for a tranny, 600 or 700 for a good carb, 800 for a good convertor, 200 for gears, and shifter for 190...so roughly 9500..plus tires, and good shocks..not bad i guess

Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
Make some new friends, go to a couple div 4 races and talk with people with small block cars with motors similar to want you need to make you combo fit. There are some very good folks here that will point you in the right direction.

Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
Have you thought about running some IHRA crate motor stock with the vortec motor you got? You could do that while you're building your other combo?
Chip |
Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
yes actually i have thought about that,,just havent took the time to check
into all the rules..its really a better deal..half the cars for almost the same money..i bet it would cost half to make it IHRA legal instead of NHRA legal..im going to do some checking today..if you find any usefull info on either class i could really use it.. thanks-colton |
Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
Colton
I will be at the IHRA Divisional at Dallas Raceway on March 12 to the 14. You are more than welcome to stop by and hang out with us. |
Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
sounds good..hopefully i will be racing in it!
|
Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
Good idea spend the same amount of money on a car that you can only race in IHRA.
The cost to build a small block chevy crate motor and a .30 under nhra stocker are about the same. At least if you build a NHRA car you can run both NHRA and IHRA. |
Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
Chuckie,
The reason I suggested the crate motor is thats basically what he has now. He could get his feet wet while building a crossover combo. Chip |

Didn't look to see where he's from but he could run combos with this. Maybe an IHRA divisional. Like you said, get his feet wet. Build the car with the mindset of setting it up for NHRA legal stock later. Figure out what NHRA combo you plan to run and start collecting pieces. Why all the knocks on the IHRA crate combos? I'm no expert on this but the guy can feel free to PM me and I'll help him in any way I can. If I can't get my own car ready, be glad to see someone else make it out. |
Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
im leaning more towards the NHRA stock setup..i would like to hit all
the div.4 races...i could really use some help finding the correct serial numbers for the block, heads etc(1982 malibu wagon classic)...the nhra site is confusing to me,not exatcly sure what numbers to look at..i may have found a 305..a fellow racer around here has 2 305s that may work..i just need to get the correct numbers to compare them..he also has a th350 that i can use..may have found a good deal on a q-jet carb, and a convertor also..trying to find a sponsor to help with this deal, but the odds of that are very small..hopefully one of the 305s match,,i would be in pretty good shape if that happened...everybodys help is very appreciated and i can damn sure use every bit of advice anyone can give me.. thanks-colton |
Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
That is one of the single funniest things I have read here.....
And way too accurate...... Like I said the old man throwing money off a tall building would have been cheaper, at least 1/2 way through that he woulda said "Oh ****" and stopped...... lol Quote:

Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
There are other places, but the 2 that have the info I think you are looking for are
http://www.nhra.com/competition/blueprints.aspx and of course http://www.nhra.com/competition/classification.aspx But there may be more info in the accepted products list (?) http://www.nhra.com/userfiles/file/N...edProducts.pdf But I dont see block numbers on the Blueprint guide ? Maybe the SBC dosent matter ? We have them on our guide, but.....well who knows , maybe someone who actually does could shed some light on this. I have been "told" that block numbers "dont matter" ? But well I was a little leary of that, if thats the case why are they in some cases listed ? We had talked about sleeving a 6.1 block to the right bore for a 5.7 at one point....(before I realized I had 2 new 5.7 blocks of the "right" number available in my storage :) Guess it pays to be a pack rat. Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
Colton, go to a div. race coming up in Nhra in your area. Find someone with your combo and do some talking. You'll probably find more info than you can rememeber and maybe some one with some spare parts cheap and role in and be competitve. Then you can build off that and be faster as time and money permit. But race Nhra, Ihra and some Assc. races good luck and have fun. (I agree with Charlie on this) and I think he know's your combo well.

Re: how much do build this to a stocker??

Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
Any gm block, its the head #s that need to be right, intake and carb but the carb number can be diff if the cfm, size of the butterflys are the same and that is listed in the blueprint spec's sheet.

Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
Thanks Bob, I'm the guy with the 305 parts. Y'all have all given Colton some great advice. He is a good kid and a great new driver that didn't grow up racing in a JR dragster that daddy's money built. This message board is one of my favorites because one can get some pretty decent answers to real question a Stocker newbe might have. And young stocker racers are few and far between. Although I only bracket race now I too was introduced to NHRA stock eliminator by a young man two years my senior working at a Piggly Wiggly store. He built my first 283 stocker motor in exchange for some hand lettering on his O/S wagon. That motor is still in great working order and has all the tricks allowed in the late 1970's. But with his help getting started, I've been racing ever since, and as any first generation racer knows how difficult it can be getting started in class legal racing. BTW, that racer that help me get started was the infamous "Pickles Gapp Flash" Dwight Southerland. Thanks Dwight

Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
You are 100% right, we all had someone to show us the way. I look forward to meeting this young man at up coming races. If we do not offer help to beginners there will be no one left to race when all of us old farts pass on. Colton already has a sound start and should be ready to kick some of our butts by mid season. I wish him well.

Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
If i am correct, here are some numbers i found, tell me if it looks right
head casting-14014416,20555 springs- outer w damp cam lift- 357/390 gasket-.016 manifold-14031391 lifter-1.50 H head cc-55.00 i may be completely lost |
Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
whitch combo, I will look now
|
Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
the manifold and cam match a 305-145 but your head # dose not match, print out the 82 spec sheet and use a ruler to read the lines. Its easy to get crossed up.

Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
1982 and 1983 malibu wgns are the same. Call it a 1983 because you can both 305 combos.
There are to different 305 combos for a wgn that year. 305ci Flat top piston 253 NHRA HP fits J/SA, K/SA and L/SA The head you want is 416 Flat top piston 403/415 cam 432 or 055 intake Combo number two 305ci Dish piston 230 NHRA HP fits M/SA, N/SA and O/SA Same head as combo #1 Dish piston 357/390 cam Same intake #'s as combo #1 |
Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
Cheatin' Charlie .....Are you sure these are "LEGAL" Piston combos ......Laughing, Bailey

Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
Colton,
I have what you need. Motor went .70 under in an 85 camaro about 10 yrs. ago. Has about 400 passes in a bracket car. Has 1 416 head & 1 555 head, passed tec. Cam is small, 357/373. Intake is 520 which is wrong for you. 5 cases of miller lite or $100.00 American will get it out of my way. Engine lift not included. Jim |

Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
Colton-
Just be careful, if Mr. Cassels gives you any sauces in little jars and you decide to "try them out" while driving back home, make sure your truck is in park! Tim |
Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
Well I am sure we all wish you a happy birthday and all want to see you get off on the right foot. Others have gotten lost in the rules and never heard from again, so that is why folks offer help.

Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
Colton,
Don't get too excited about that motor. It went .7 under in a camaro 10 yrs. ago, it was a F.I. motor rated at 230 hp, m/sa then. In your car with a qudrajet it is rated at 254 hp which will be k/sa. As you can see you will have to move up to k which is .2, add aprox 100 lbs which is .1 and NHRA lowered the indexs .3 , so I am sure it would not run the index as it is now. It was running when removed from a Malibu I have but it will need a lot of work. Yours if you wont it. Jim PS Tim you have heard of Montazomas revenge, well that was General Robert E. Lee's revenge. Hope you are doing well. LMAO Jim |
Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
i plan on completely rebuilding it and buying whatever i might need to make it run decent..
|
Re: how much do build this to a stocker??
Jim-
I'm doing just fine and I hope the same for you. I'll never forget that trip to your place, especially the trip back. We stopped at a Mc Donalds for a little health food somewhere north of Georgia. They forgot to give me my ketchup, so my older wiser brother ventured through the bag of tomatoes you gave us and poured some of that stuff that had devils and flames on it, on my burger. After several bites I found myself on the side of the Interstate flushing Monster Energy drinks on my eyes and mouth! Still to date, best tomatoes I have ever had!! Do you have Greg's email? I misplaced it and haven't chatted with him for some time. Tim |
