Canadian Leaded Fuel Ban. Jan 1st 2010?

Hey I found this message floating around the internet and was wondering if anyone else has heard anything about it? Guessing if its true theres no more extensions or anything else. Sounds like we are in a world of trouble again...

Hello: motor sport enthusiasts.
Hope this letter finds you all well.
This is a reminder that leaded race fuel may no longer be available as of January 1st 2010. According to federal Gasoline Regulations documents from the Department of the Environment, regulations were amended in 1994 to add a 2 1/2-year exemption for leaded gasoline imported, for use in competition vehicles.
This exemption has been extended three times, in 1997, 1998 and 2003. Then it was extended Dec. 31; 2007.This exemption will no longer be in place as of Jan. 1, 2010.
There are other factors involved with the proposed ban on leaded gas. How will it be enforced? Will there be government officials at each and every racetrack, checking the fuel cells of each race vehicle?
The document can be found on the Government of Canada website, under Canada Gazette Part 1, Dec. 22, 2007.
Please feel free to contact me at any time for further information

Hmmm it sounds like the government is dictating what racers can and cannot do. This will put another nail the coffin for the IHRA races in Ontario Canada and probably hurt tracks like Luskville, Que,.Napierville, Que for divisional races.

Also what are the local series going to do? We have a greats series in Southern Ontario (Can-Am Stock/Super Stock) kinda wondering what will happen there?

As well as numerous other traveling associations like the NAPA Quick 32 , TNT 10.90 Hot Rod and OSCA, they have large followings that utilize high compression gas engines that run on leaded fuel.

Just seemed so strange that all summer there wasnt one word said by anyone about what was taking place behind the scenes to resolve this issue.

You are right. We heard nothing all summer, then this.

Hopefully somebody can fill us in here soon.

Tomorrow, I'm going to try and find out some details. I do know that VP had been working on something, just have no info.

It's total BS....has been proven that 99% of leaded fuel in Canada is used in aviation.....1% used in motorsports. This is just more useless legislation

I was talking to a guy who fuels planes in Halifax, today he filled 103987 kg (228771 lbs) of fuel in only four planes.

I agree with you Rick Blake it is total BS!!! You have some politician with his head up his chute that is going to save North America by banning lead in racing fuel in Canada. Don't these guys ever look at the data to see how little of an effect lead in race fuel has on the environment? I guess he must be trying to show his tree hugging constituants that he is doing something and in turn is killing a profitable industry. He wins the ignoramus award of the century. I have not heard one iota of information regarding what the plan is for phasing lead out of avation fuel.

Hey everyone I found this in an e-mail I received this morning. Thought I would post it for everyone.

Canada's Gasoline Regulations have prohibited the production, import and sale of leaded gasoline since 1990. Since 1994, the Regulations have exempted the use of leaded gasoline in competition vehicles. The exemption expires on December 31, 2009, after which time production, import or sale of leaded gasoline for use in competition vehicles will no longer be allowed in Canada.

Environment Canada intends to consult with stakeholders in early November 2009, on whether to continue to allow the use of leaded gasoline in competition vehicles.

If you would like to be included on the stakeholder distribution list, please send an email to OGAED@ec.gc.ca with your name and email or mailing address.

I sent them a note saying I support continuing the exemption for leaded fuel for motorsports.
We all should.

Can't they see that this affects any type of racing from Go Karts to Formula One cars, power boat racing, motorcycle racing; all of this creates revenue yet it's OK to let air planes to burn the same leaded fuel.

Looks like politicians are stupid no matter which side of the border they are on.

Good luck guys,

Don't think this is just a Canadian issue. Our brothers to the north may be fighting it now, but if they lose, it’s just a matter of time till politicians down here jump on the bandwagon. And our fight will be even harder, cause some tree hugging demmy will point north and say "they did it, so should we."

to eliminate comp.leaded fuel wich is less than5% and let aviation fuel continue is the most rediculious decision i have herd, just like the canadian emmision test,if car fails test and you spend over $400.00 in repairs at a authorized service centre, and still fails you are given a pass till next test, car is still putting out bad emmisions ,and then 100 miles away they have no test, ontario and canadian government are a joke , i fly a italian and a U.S flag on my home thats it.. venting

The 2010 IHRA Nitro Jam schedule has been released and this question should be asked of the stakeholders....will there be UNLEADED fuels on the approved list for the Sportsman classes and Pro Stock at Edmonton & Grand Bend?

Just in case the bureaucrats in Ottawa don't see the light, has anyone tried running C10 in a s/ss?
In the mean time, harrass the **** out of your local MP.

Any news available on the leaded fuel ban in Canada? Has anyone been contacted by Environment Canada on this topic?

I've asked this question of several local racers. IF Canada leaded fuel ban does go in effect how is IHRA going to have a race there? I have no idea how they can put this race on the schedule with this pending legislation. What will IHRA do if this is put in effect, just cancell all Canadian races? When will we all know the out come? Joe

what is the definition of importing? If a yankee brings it in his car for his own use, not for sale, is that still considered importing?

I bought racing fuel at epping and took it home no question asked. So come to the race and bring your fuel in red gas cans and mark it unlead. no need to cancell all Canadian races.

The Good news is I have spoken to 3 MP's about this and have been assured that the Canadian Minister of the Environment has Signed off on an extention that recommends that our extention on Leaded fuels coinside with the US policies. Meaning that until the US phases out leaded fuels we will follow suit. Now I haven't seen the documentation yet but I am assured this is what has happened..

If true, it would seem there has been a little outbreak of "common sense" on the "Hill".
Good news at any rate. Our thanks to your Dad for his valuable contribution to the cause.
