Janne, he said in his response to you that it was a street car; probably not set up for class-legal drag racing.

As I recall the RA 1968 is called a 400 HO. Virtually the same specs as the RAIV. I have a neighbor that still has his 1 owner 1968 GTO HO. Extremely rare!

Re: Firebird 67-68

The HO and Ram Air 1 motors had D port heads and the Ram Air II motor had round port heads with the standard size intake port in `68.In` 69 the Ram Air IV motor was introduced with round port exhaust like the Ram Air II but with a taller intake port had the same cam as the Ram Air II but had 1.65 rockers. The 400 HO was called a Ram Air III in `69 and `70. So,no the Ram Air IV and HO motors do not have virtually the same specs.

I agree on the round / D port, etc., but I think the confusion on names is Pontiac never really had a Ram Air II. They had the 1968 400 4bbl with D ports and no numerical designation which was followed by a Ram Air with round ports which technically was never marketed as a Ram Air II. Correct? Followed by the Ram Air III of 1969/1970/1971 with D ports and the RAIV with round ports of 1969/1970. I'm no Pontiac expert so let me know if I'm wrong.

I wonder why NHRA has the 1969 Firebird RAIV and RAIII rated the same 356 HP with all the better parts on the RAIV? Seems like the RAIV would be the best of these two.
1968 shows in NHRA as having the Firebird with a 400 that's OEM / NHRA rated at 330 / 325 - 335 / 327 - 335 / 340 RA & 340 / 335 RA. That would take a lot more investigating.
Since I'm not building a FB, good luck Janne!

Re: Firebird 67-68

The Ram Air I came out in `67 and was continued until mid `68 and that`s when the Ram Air II was introduced and that ran until the end of `68. The Ram Air II had the first round port exhaust heads and a .480ish lift cam.

`69 the 400 HO was then called the Ram Air III and the Ram Air IV was introduced. The Ram Air III was still a D port motor with the small lift cam while the IV motor had round port exhaust and tall intake runners. The high lift Ram Air II cam was used again in the Ram Air IV motor but had 1.65 rockers which made the lift somewhere around .520.

The HO moniker was used in `70 for the 455 which was a D port motor and then in `71 and `72 the 455HO had the round port heads with the tall intake runners.

Re: Firebird 67-68

The first fast street car I ever rode in was a 1968 Firebird 400 convertible with a six-pack, 411 gear and a four-speed. I was sixteen at the time and had never been over 60 mph riding with my parents. My friend who was nineteen, took me for a ride in it. He went out to a country road that had about a half mile straight in it and comes to a stop. Then he proceeded to rev up the engine and go through the gears til we hit a 110 mph. I had never felt anything like that before. When we got back to the house, my knees were shaking as I got out of the car. I know I got off topic a little but the post reminded me of this experience.

I had a '69 GTO RAIV / 4-speed / 4.33 car not long ago. I only owned it briefly as I sent it to the BJ auction. It was completely stock. I sure gained a TON of respect for the Pontiac RAIV with my "exhibition runs". I would love to own a '69 Firebird with the same drive train. Yea, I know how rare they are and how much you must pay for one (if you can find one), even a 3.90 rear gear would be a hoot. That would be a keeper!

Re: Firebird 67-68

In 67 I bought a new GTO with the 400HO motor, 4 speed and 390 gears rated at 360hp. The ram air motor had the same HP rating at 360 but had a wilder cam plus the ram air. I cant recall if they just called it the ram air or ram air 1 I believe except for the cam they were identical but could be wrong

Six-Pack is not a term Pontiac ever used. They called it a Tri-Power and they did not offer that option after 1966. Firebirds never had Tri-Powers stock. The last year was 1966 on GTO's and full size cars.....

I sincerely hope you were able to get together with Jim DeFrank on his Firebird. Jim is a first class guy and his cars are all first class and fast. His Firebird is no exception.
