Line Locks Revisited
OK, I already know how to plumb the line lock, but my question is
how many of you use it to lock the front brakes vs deactivating the rear brakes for your burn out and why did you choose that option?? |

this is a new method to me, never heard of "blocking" the rear? How, why would that be done?

OK, just taking a guess here, have not tried this, but kind of interesting.
I am guessing they are using the solenoid to block pressure from rear brakes when button is pushed. This would allow you to use or drag front brakes to do a rolling burnout... not sure why you would do this unless in a class you could burnout out over the line, or you were just doing a show or burnout contest type deal... Is this the set up you are discussing and can I ask why? Ken |

We've always installed it to lock the front brakes.

One other thing to think about on this. If you block the line going to the rear brakes with a line lock solonoid the piston in the master cylinder is not going to want to move since the fluid in the line would build pressure very fast with little pedal movement, therefore making it very hard to build pressure in the front brakes. Also if you can build pressure you would have to hold your foot on the brake pedal during the burnout to maintain it. If you want to do a rolling burnout why not just set the brake pressure lower with the line lock on the front (ie if you usually set it at 800 just use 400 or whatever works for you) so the car will still roll a little bit when it comes out of the water box.

Thanks for the comments. I have always seen it done the "normal"
way of locking the front brakes. But Bob Mazzolini recommends using it to lock out the rears so you can do your burn out and just use the brake pedal to control speed with the front brakes. This is how he has his SS/AH car set up. |

I could be wrong on this, but wasn't the line loc originally designed to hold stick shift cars from rolling on the starting line by holding pressure to the front brakes.
Phil stick to using them on the front, who knows what kind of exotic brake setup that AH car could have on it. |

George that is exactly what I'm going to do.
But I have seen Mazzolini's Hemi Cuda up on the lift and the line lock is plumbed in the brake line running to the rear. I guess he uses it so the rears are unlocked and you just do a burn out and then stop with the front brakes. Mine will be plumbed for the fronts only. |

very interesting... look like a pro stocker doing a burn through very cool... SS/AH cars can go past the starting line on their burn out? Or is this when they are just competing in the Hemi challenge?

I was told at a teardown years ago in Memphis that is illegal to have the line loc on the rear brakes. Even though I was using it as you described Phil, I believe the concern was that people would lock the rear wheels when staging and leave by releasing the button..

Oh well mine will be done the "normal" way. |

I wouldn't spread the word too much about Bobs rear line-loc. According to the 2009 rulebook a rear wheel line-loc is not legal in Stock or Super Stock. Pages 118 and 108.

I have an output from my delay box to the line-loc to keep my stocker from settling forward or backwards any when I set the transbrake. BTW, just kidding on the electronics being in my stocker, this is a bracket car at present.

are you looking at plumbing from master cylinder because many people plumb the first line openening closest to the firewall the rear opening in the master cylinder to the front brakes and install a line lock to the front then the front opening they route to the rear brakes maybe you looked at the rear line closest to the firewall and assumed it was plumbed to the rear brakes

I don't have my '09 rule book right here but in the '08 book on page 141 Section 9A, Brakes and Suspensions: 3, #5 it states:
Rear wheel line-lock prohibited; front wheel line-lock permitted. Parking brake optional. |

I can tell you from past experiences that a rear or 4 wheel linelock isn't legal! Period! Not in D1 anyway.
