NHRA could and should use that platform for a race. It was so hot and humid you could could not stand it. We changed out 2 trans. I remember seeing 101F in the shade! I was over taken by heat stroke. BUT IT WAS STILL THE MOST FUN I EVER HAD DRAG RACING!! AWESOME RACE!! LETS HAVE ANOTHER! And,..hay by the way......ALEX D. Thanks for the memory!!!! |
Re: US Class Nationals
My daughter and I attended and it was great. Melissa ran class, and two eliminators. Keep up the good work Alex and Terry.
|
Re: US Class Nationals

Re: US Class Nationals
One of my all time favorite memories while my boys still lived at home. The three of us flew out from Seattle and had a blast. My sons had never seen class racing like that, and I remember the look on my older son's face after about the first 10 pairs ran ( remember Friday morning,,all stick cars came to the lanes) saying, Dad,,this is the baddest! Yeah it was very hot,, but we knew we were seeing something special. I'd never met Alex before or have seen him since,, but I made a point to go to his pit and thank him for putting that race together. I'd love to see it happen again,,I know I'm not alone. Re: US Class Nationals
If Alex D. wants to put together another event like this I will do everything I possibly can to be there. I want to see class racing alive and well while the idea is still possible.
|
Re: US Class Nationals
I sure hope it happens again. My family and I made the drive from Roseville California to just watch the event. It was the greatest event that I have seen. GeerHead55, remember that is where our two families meet for the first time. This time it will be easier to attend the event because I moved to Illinois from California so I won't have to make the long trip.

Re: US Class Nationals
Jeff,,,Yeah, that was quite a weekend,,,,,,,, lets keep our fingers crossed it'll happen again. I'm not sure if the tracks have been chosen yet,,let alone secured for any given dates....................Danny Durham

Re: US Class Nationals
I wonder if the Bader Family would be interested in an event like this. Norwalk is a great race facility, good location, and good people run the track. I'll bet they would get a ton of cars to boot.
|
Re: US Class Nationals
There are tracks & track owners that have the place & the spectator base to do a US Class Nationals race or be a part of the series. They will just have to get in the right position to do it. They will have to work to promote it to maxamize their profit.

Re: US Class Nationals
Time for it again.
Any track that is associated with NHRA is going to feel pressure to NOT run an independent race like the US Class Nationals. Read the fine print in the sanction contract. It happend the first time & will happen again because they feel threatened. That is something that must be workerd on . Case in point look at the latest race in Houston.. compromise.. 50% nitro... It is my opinion they will pressure insurance companies too. We lost a couple of key people at the US Class Nationals because of the pressure. Others stepped up and made it happen. I was proud to be a part of it. It can be done again & again, but it will have to be very well organized. I was told a race at Virginia was planned as a second US Class Nationals, but it didn't happen. I suspect it was outside pressure. No one ever called to tell me. Then Alex faced personal attacks from a racer with past issues & ulterior motives. It just got to be too much of a hassel to do it again. Now is the time to reorganize & do it again as a series. I'm sure ready. |
Re: US Class Nationals
is he talking about letting all mod cars run in comp-mod. that would be great. indexws would have to be changed. to soft for comp.

Re: US Class Nationals
what about Bowling Green's Beech Bend??, That would be a good central location

Boy did we have fun working together Adger, didnt we, I already told Alex I'm game.
|
Re: US Class Nationals
Alex, Adger, Nitro Joe: What about Martin, Mich? ...aka: Pop Hot Rod Meet.....Count me in as an Event Sponsor/ Contengencies!!!
|
Re: US Class Nationals
I wonder if Bill Kapolka from Milan Dragway would be interested. Milan is an IHRA track that lost the Motor City Nationals. As far as I know with the exception of the NMCA and possibly Pinks, I don't know if Milan has any other large events not even an IHRA points meet. There is another good possibility, Milan is a nice facility that could handle the cars and people.

Re: US Class Nationals
As long as they mow their grass and spray for mosquitos before the race!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: US Class Nationals
Sway's Place.
Atco NJ |
Re: US Class Nationals
How about Charlotte? I'll bet NHRA wouldn't try to strong-arm Bruton...the city of Concord tried that and you see where it got them!
|
Re: US Class Nationals
Charlotte...........Now That's a great idea ! ! ! Talk to Doug Herbert. He has the connections.
Does anybody know what ever happened to US 31 in Morroco,In ? That wasn't a bad place. |
Re: US Class Nationals
I agree that Charlotte would be great, but how about Gateway? It's centrally located and NHRA probably wouldn't mess with the corporate ownership.
|
Re: US Class Nationals
Jim, NSCA went to Morocco a few years ago for the race, it really got ran down and track traction was about as good as the return road if thats any hint.
|
Re: US Class Nationals
Concord wants too much money to make an event viable there.
Bowling Green, Norwalk, US131, No Problem are nice options. |
Re: US Class Nationals
Only if I can win again. But it would be worth it to have a couple of beers with the wild Ukrainian even if he likes Fords. That is the only race I ever won. Course being a professional I only like races with at least 180 cars in the field. Did yall see my light in Baton Rouge. A 143, and I think it was 1.43 seconds. My 60' was quicker than my reaction. I need another US Class Nationals to get my timing right. Count us in.
|
Re: US Class Nationals
It would be hard to beat No Problem. Long drive for me, but I have seen no better facility, or people, for cars like ours.
|
Re: US Class Nationals
Jeff Teuton!!!!!! Some time ago I gave you the answer for your reaction time problem ,but that was for when you got older! So maybe now is the time to refresh! When you get older and your reflexes start to go away, you compensate for that by leaving on the PRESTAGE! Then the lite will be in the .015-.025 range, if your on your toes! Besides i think i helped carry a block into your trailer at BYRON! Have a good day.I Talked to Alex yesterday and he seems really fired up. Later.......... John

Re: US Class Nationals
It's hard to beat Atco for track conditions, and management.
|
Re: US Class Nationals
Atco and No Problem are no doubt premier drag strips, but wouldn't a midwest location best serve the racers from all of the divisions?
It will be the US Class Nationals, correct? |
Re: US Class Nationals
I would think something in the central US if it is to draw a representative sample and truly be a US Class Nationals II; another consideration to increase enthusiasm and attendence is the capability to run good ET's, all out, no AHFS.....the turnout at Maple Grove for the Hemi Shootout was impressive. So that being said, in my opinion you rule out anything west of Topeka, or east of Joliet....my top picks would be:
1. Joliet 2. Tri-State (Earlville, IA) 3. Bowling Green 4. Norwalk (slightly east!) 5. Stanton or Martin MI 6. Topeka (darn headwind mostly) April or late Sept-October Probably can't get nor afford Joliet & Topeka, probably same for Norwalk, so Tri-State or Bowling Green seem to be logical choices in my view |
Re: US Class Nationals
Randall (& all),
Topeka might be more affordable than you think. For a "US" Class nationals, I can't think of a more central location. Held in the fall with the air that used to send the pro's to record runs could get interesting. And, with ALL of the asphalt the track has, I don't think anyone would be parked on dirt/grass (unless they wanted to be). NHRA moved their event from the fall to the spring @ Topeka because of Nascar putting their event @ the Kansas Speedway on top of the fall race date, why not take advantage of what was normaly some pretty good weather for an event of this type. While there are a LOT of great tracks back east, Alex had the right idea with the original location in Illinois, at least he was trying to keep it centralized. Get the event too far east, and while you have a large base of racers to draw from, you start eliminating those west of the Mississippi. For it to be a "US" class nats, I would think that you would need to keep the opportunity open for those of a western persuasion. My only question would be race or announce......either would be a blast! my .02 Unk |
Re: US Class Nationals
Thoughts?......Memphis?.........Isn't Steve Quien down there? Familiar to the sportsman?
Just thinking out loud. |
Re: US Class Nationals
Biggest thing to remember guys, track rental is a killer anymore for these bigger tracks with big dollar owners.
The ticket is to get a private track owner like Alex did with Ron Leaks and BJ, they moreless partnered with him on the expenses and that made things alot easier also. I've seen some track rentals as much as 25k for 3 day event, thats nuts, you would have to pack the stands and pits to make that up to break even. |
Re: US Class Nationals
I like Topeka, I here Earlville, IA is nice too it may not be as hot there what time of the year would it be?
|
Re: US Class Nationals
Curt,
Dang nice looking car you got there........ Could I borrow it in about 3 weeks? I'd like to return to the scene of the crime.......... :-) Unk Now, back to the US class nats discussion...... |
Re: US Class Nationals
I LOVE Tri-State! All concrete track, up hill shut down, large staging lanes.
I'd love to race at an event like this! |
Re: US Class Nationals
I'm not a 100% on this, (given the politics involved), but with enough advanced notice & "planning" - this event has the Bader Family written all over it !!!! And God knows there'd be great fireworks!!!!
