Live from Pomona -- NHRA World Finals
 

Here it is kids - the best racing in the world - in my humble opinion racing on Parker Avenue is even bigger than Indy - no circus stuff -- just heritage . Me , I'm just glad to be here -- after everything that has gone on during the last week this surely will be like a vacation .

Still some champs to be crowned here -- and I was extra glad for Lee Zane yesterday bringing the Stock World Championship trophy back to Division One .

Called home this morning and it seems the frost is on the pumpkin as they say-- but here in Sunny southern California -- well its shorts and short sleeves -- you get the picture .

Tech is open this afternoon for most competitors and there are several hundred on the grounds allready -- doesn't anyone work ? ? After that its going to be a little R&R -- my old butt is really draggin'...........later .

I gotta agree-the first time my comp car raced out there was in 2005 and I was able to get for Friday-Sun. It was so great. I was bummed I couldn't go when we raced there last year-my students have this thing about me being around when I give tests. I've never been to Indy and one year I'd love to go. But I'd send that car out to Pomona every year if the bank account allowed it (in this economy, the bank account is having a hard time providing hot dogs for the hot dogs and beans). Southern California is where it was all started. Plus I've got family there and none in Indiana.

Jack - You east coast guys don't understand. It's ALWAYS shorts and short sleeve weather here. Why else would be there be 20 million idiots clogging our freeways every morning.

I was just looking at the super stock entry list for Pomona and there are 10 gt/aa entries (I'm registered in gt/ba but will be running gt/aa at Pomona). Is gt/aa becoming the new hot class? I sure hope so!

Today its great to be in Pomona -- the temp already at 78 and very sunny -- the other numbers are much above Vegas -- barometer at 29 even -- humidity at 25.4% and the VP is at .25 -- bad news is the DA -- 2780 and climbing....

Today is parking and tech -- mostly bench racing with old friends for me -- all day to catch-up .Haven't been here for a few years and things have really changed -- most of you aren't aware but there is only one tree on the whole property and this year I couldn't get within a 1/4 mile of it -- and I liked parking under it -- oh well ! ! !

Brock Mosier joined us today - (as a trailer mate) - most of you don't know him -- he won the Summit race at Maple Grove this year and quaified for the big Summit race here -- good luck to him this weekend .

Before I forget--- thanks to Tony James for my ride in this morning -- he probably bit off more than he could chew with me -- he thought it was just a ride in but I needed to do dry cleaners -- donuts -- newspaper and then ice - he was wore out by the time we got to the track .Those of you who know me understand how I am ......

Good morning all --- Its like they say --"the gangs all here" -- and boy are they ready . Lets get right to it -- we'll be out on the track in an hour or so and we've got us a very , very nice southern California weather front -- picture perfect as it can be - (and did I mention sunny and blue skies) - 55 degrees -- 64 % humidity and burning off fast -- 28.94 barometer and climbing with a DA of 915 -- if the Safety Safari has the place prepped we will go fast this morning .

The schedule calls for two qualifiers today and tomorrow Stock and SuperStock have rounds one and two -- I'll be back after the first lick and give you the "poop"................

PS -- Had breakfast this morning with Larry Maxwell / Dave Schmidt / Chuck Norton etc - - it was like a breakfast meeting of "Grumpy Old Men ".......good to see them.......later

Well , the honeymoon is over -- I "found" all the broken pieces from last weeks blow-up -- yep -they were on the opposite side of the engine -- we looked real good and never found anything but this morning at the finish line they reappeared -- popcorn and plenty of it.. I'll get back to ya.....

Turned out it wasn't as fast as it could have been -- still some respectable runs were made -- Bobby DeAmond showed with low ET and big speed --Q 2 coming up after the Pros .......

You're never ever going to believe this one -- this tale will go into "Strange Stories" for sure .After taking my engine apart this afternoon I started to package the parts up for shipping home -- I wrapped each piece with plastic and started piling them up on a work table and on the ground at the end of our trailer .At some point I stopped and went for a water --- when I returned I noticed that I had a new garbage box -- and then -- oh ***** -- no parts left -- it didn't take much to figure out that the garbage people were by and picked-up my stuff .I went to them and got the shuffle -- then I went to track security -- more shuffle -- then I went to NHRA security -- they help a little but mostly shuffle. The I went to the head of track services -- THAT woman gave new meaning to bitch -- all she did was cover-up -- "My people would never do that --I asked them" she said -- then I went back to NHRA and I'm very sorry to say I got nothing -- most of you who know me know I'm a big NHRA supporter -I've never been TO'ed so many times in one afternoon- and would never in a million years thought they would just say "oh well" and walk away .Thousands of dollars worth of parts and no one cared -- shame on them ! ! At one point an NHRA person told me I could not look for them myself because they would have "Union Issues" -- I gotta tell you I was ready to punch the guy -- can you imagine ?

Some of you might think this is a far fetched story but those who know me will tell you I never lie -- period .

Shame on you NHRA --for not caring..........I don't think they were stolen -- just mistook for garbage but you didn't want to be concerned .

Jack Matyas is a pretty stand up guy so why would anyone from NHRA want NOT to help him out?

Who was the woman in charge of track services Jack?

Did you get her name, rank, and serial number?

I think she deserves her 15 minutes of fame don't you?

How about it Jack, shouldn't you let the entire world know who this fine carring ambassador for the NHRA is so we can all applaud her should any of us ever have the misfortune of coming in contact with her?

Thats BS, you need to find the guy NHRA hired to handle insurance problems at national events...He is a ex-police officer, who handles claims and settles arguements on site.. I will try to get his name for you...He is the guy who helped me at the Virginia race, when I had a problem .....Good Luck and don't let this get swepted under the rug...Its wrong and they should help you out...... later, Dave

Jack, inform the garbage people and NHRA that you are with the Don Schumacher or the John Force camp. That should make them just jump up and start looking for your parts.

Most of the time the garbage cans are overflowing, they must be an amazing garbage service.

Her name is Kara ?????? and she comes from the Fontana track. They fired the old track manager and brought in all new people. All of us old timers were left out this race. I've been working the 2 races at Pomona for 10 years and they wanted all new people. That's probably not going to be the only F U this weekend.
