Do you have to have correct hood
My question is this does NHRA Tech no longer care if you have the correct hood on your Stock / Super Stock car? I ask this because I was looking at my latest Dragster with the Virginia sportsman results and I noticed that the car Adam Davis drove to victory a 1967 Camaro has the wrong hood on it. It has a 396/325hp engine, you could not get the flat hood with that engine. The 67 Camaro with the 350 or 396 is an SS RPO Z-27 package only and part of that package was the raised hood with finned inserts. So what is the deal, Im just wondering not trying to make no one mad or get in trouble I would like to know.

Re: Do you have to have correct hood
Maybe it is like the 340 6 pack Cuda and Challengers with their fiberglass hoods.
In every car collection and street car you see, these hoods are only on the 340 6 Pack cars yet somehow they are now legal on nearly every V8! |
Re: Do you have to have correct hood
They do care, some of the corvette racers have been told in the past to change their hoods and that they will not be allowed to race if they come to the next race with the bogus hood.

Re: Do you have to have correct hood
Same deal as the white B/S 427 Fairlane STATION WAGON running the fiber glass scooped hood. They only came on 2 dr. sedans and 2dr. hard tops with 2 X 4's originally but they look cool so who cares.....lol.

Re: Do you have to have correct hood
I guess if no one cares we can put the cowl induction hoods on the 67 & 68 Camaros then HA HA.

Re: Do you have to have correct hood
You have to remember that the NHRA crew that look at these cars are getting to be a younger crowd. They don't know which hood belongs to which combo. The 1969 Camaros comes with the spoiler and the front air dam or neither of them. Yet I see the cars with the air dam and not the spoiler. The NHRA people either don't know or don't want to regulate the cars.
I'm so tied of hearing that NHRA doesn't want to be bother with tear downs and other enforcement of regulations. The enforcement and regulations are what make it fun with a even playing field. We pay dues to NHRA and when we go to the races we pay a large entry fees which should cover the enforcement of the rules. NHRA doesn't want to pay the people to do the jobs of what we are paying for. Because NHRA doesn't want to do their work, we end up buying new parts or changing parts to get to where their lack of enforcement forces us to go. Unregulated valve jobs is just one more item that shows their lack of involvement. Next it will be just pump the engines to make sure you are just close to the cubic inches the car is supposed to have. Casey Miles 248H E/S becasue of 4 hp |

Kevin they were only the louvers were differant between 67 & 68...Dad has a 67 SS 396/325 car. We have had it for about 22 years now.

Re: Do you have to have correct hood
Several years ago NHRA dropped the hammer on '71 Corvette LS-6 cars that ran the L-88 hood.
Required that they only run the standard big block hood. |
Re: Do you have to have correct hood
They have the info on all the hoods. Enforcement is very uneven I guess for several reasons mentioned. But then enforcement is uneven in all aspects of Stock and Super Stock. They are a couple of racers that are currently challenging them on this issue. Should be interesting.

Re: Do you have to have correct hood
I noticed that as soon as i opened my dragster, when I went from a 327 to a 350 I put the SS hood on my car and I thought the 396 had to have it also,IF this hood is being allowed to run I am putting mine back on they are alot lighter.

Re: Do you have to have correct hood
Run the flat hood if you want, they dont care. The way I understand it; from a conversation or twenty with Bruce Bachelder; if a hood was produced in the year that you claim your car is and it fits; it's OK. UNLESS.......... it is a cowl induction or fresh air hood that was not available with your combo or if we are talking Corvette, in which case NOTHING is legal. I think the Mopar contingent has stretched this deal farther than anyone and the Ford guys always seem to find obscure documentation when they need it. You being a Chevy guy are at a disadvantage cuz there is a purist/expert under every rock that just can't wait to point out that your car is "not right" I personally think that the time has come to stop fretting about such things and consider rulebook wording like "stock type replacement hoods, OE material, OE hinges and latches allowed". Remember, this is just my opinion and it's worth every dime you are paying for it. .

Re: Do you have to have correct hood
My pet peeve is 70-73 Camaros that are not split bumper cars having split bumpers! After having a 70 1/2 RS/SS, it's just one of those things!
BTW, split bumper cars should have their parking lights right next to the headlights and they,(parking lights) should be round. Non-split bumper (full bumper) cars have a sorta long rectangular light under the bumper. OK, now back to our regularly scheduled hood thread....... |

Re: Do you have to have correct hood
The Mopar cars get to use the 'glass hood because back in 70 when your ordered the car with the fresh air hood, there was a shortage of shaker hoods and Chrysler used the 'glass hoods as substitutions. There is REAL documentation to verify this.

Re: Do you have to have correct hood
This kind of goes with the hood deal...I'm amazed @ the # of Novas that are running as a 69 when anybody that knows anything about them can tell it's a 70-72. Just to bring the rest of ya up to date...the 68 novas were Chevy II's & said so on them somewhere...the 69's were Novas & had short marker lights. the 70-72 had long marker light with the 70 having clear parking lights in the front bumper. sorry for going off course ;)

Re: Do you have to have correct hood
I thought Stock is suppost to be stock the way it came from the factory with no body modifications. Changing the hood from what came on it from the factory to me is a body modification. Just one more thing that gets further away from stock, Just my opinion. I do care when I see a car with the wrong hood it just aint right. If you can run any hood that was produced for that model year now then what is next? Fiberglass hoods with scoops, fiberglass fenders, doors, deck lids ect. Where does it end?

Re: Do you have to have correct hood
This thread just reminded me of a funny "Billy" story. At least a good 20 years ago I was at a points meet with my 6 cyl. stocker (V/SA) and was suprised to see the then record holder in my class there. Well, this fellow was (is) a rather famous (infamous) kind of guy with some very good ties to some manufacturers and I can't help but notice that his car (same class as mine) is a beautiful Buick GN. The only problem is that he's not running a turbo motor but a 2V 231 V/6. To make matters worse, at the end of qualifing I realize that I have to race him 1st round, heads up. I went to my Division Tech Director and ask him what kind of car and combo this fellow is racing and he tells me that it's obviously a turbo GN to which I reply "in V/SA"? My DTD goes over to the fellow and asks him to open his hood to find a carbureted V/6. Well the DTD tells the man that he's not legal and he's DQed. The man tells the DTD that the GN body kit and the hood are "Stand Alone" options on any Regal and he will have him sent the paperwork on Monday morning. The DTD let him race (cleaned my clock easily) and that was that. The following week I get sent a copy of a "corporate memo" stating just what the fellow had said that the GN body work and hood were "Stand Alone" options that could be had on any Regal. To make a long story short, a friend of mine wound up buying the car and with the paperwork that came with it was what came to be known as the "Billy" letter and a cover letter to my DTD complaining about the way that he was "abused" by me. Imagine that, me abusing somebody! You can put your own moral on this story.

Re: Do you have to have correct hood
The further away from 'stock' that these cars are allowed to get.....the closer they are to where NHRA wants you to eventually end up. You might want to keep in mind that NHRA thought Billy Meyer had the right idea 'way back as regards the Sportsman racer.
Gettin' what you want ain't always the best thing...... |

Re: Do you have to have correct hood
It goes way deeper than this. I'm building a 3rd generation Camaro for stock and I have found that NHRA allows engine/transmission combinations that never existed in the showroom. To give you and example they allow automatics in the IROC Z's that were only available in a manual five speed. They allow cars that are carburetor that only came fuel injected from the factory. You can use any body flaring that you want or none at all it seems not to mention any hood. So, you could have a base Camaro a Berlinetta a Z-28 or an IROC Z and all are acceptable. NHRA has lost control of this and if we as racers really care about our sport, like golfers need to police ourselves. Sorry, my intent was not to hi-jack this post but, I think it goes along with it somewhere.

Re: Do you have to have correct hood
Note a SS 85 Camaro is not legal with an 82 hood and a 85 motor in a SS class. It is legal as an 82 car in GT but that would mean a harder index.
The BIG question NHRA will not address fairly is the decision to stop the 71 454 Vette from using the cold Air hood. That part is not a problem if ALL cars are policed but how could they LEAVE the HP the same at 475 when the motor in a camaro is 435? GT. Comment I got was it might become a dominant combination. HUH? |
Re: Do you have to have correct hood
Dick,
That's another problem I have with NHRA why is a hood change leagle in a "GT" car when they run Super Stock as well??? If you couldn't get it from the factroy (as installed, not parts in the trunk) it shouldn't be allowed in S/SS classes. |
Re: Do you have to have correct hood
Z my point was that if someone wants to run an 82 hood on a Camaro then it is called an 82 with an 85 motor and competes in GT since the rules changes to both ways on motor/chassis combination. The car I am talking about was using the light hood and calling the car an 85 SS class car to take advantage of the slower index of SS/KA AND the light hood.

Re: Do you have to have correct hood
Way too many classes.Lots of them are used to keep from running a class where you know you cannot win in case of a heads up.I know this to be a fact, . Lots of the racers wait til last minute to see who is running what class. I go through this at tech at every event. Always some one wanting to know if so and so is running this or that . Sorry ,that's a whole new subject ../See ya at the races ///

Re: Do you have to have correct hood
The 70-72 OLDS 442 Ram Air hood was available as a stand alone option.. Ran one on the Vista Cruiser wagon in Div 6 for a number of years in S & SS.
Anyway does anyone know if you can run a ram air hood off a Z28 on an 80/81 Camaro coupe? |

Re: Do you have to have correct hood
I remermber when NHRA was so strict (mid to late 60's) that a '57 Chevy F.I. two door got bounced at Indy for claiming a business sedan (no back seat) when the trim tag on the firewall stated that the car was a standard two door sedan, although the car was done correctly.
Both cars would have run D/S, although at different weights. Just that the trim tag had the wrong code on it and you had to run the factory advertised shipping weight minimum. No adding or subtracting weight back then.. That's when stock meant stock. How far we've come since then. |

Re: Do you have to have correct hood
Each year, '67, '68 & '69, Camaro SS's had different plates on top of the hoods.
Never knew that until I saw a Camaro get bounced at an early 70's Div 2 points meet during tech-in for having the wrong year plates. Thought that was a bit extreme at the time but understood that 'stock bodied' meant 'stock bodied'. Nova SS's used the same plates on top of the hood every year ('68-'72), same as the '67 Camaro, so that was never a Nova problem. |
Re: Do you have to have correct hood
As Bobby said it sure used to be different. My pop used to run a 71 Duster in stock, NHRA tech gave him a hard time claiming the rear deck lid was suppossed to have a fin in the center of it, the rear deck lid had never been off the car since new so he knew they were full of bs.
