Can you ID these engines?

Here's a neat test for all you gearheads. Go to:

www.americantorque.com/game/engine-id/

Post how you do. I got them all correct.

Re: Can you ID these engines?

I got them all right too, although I did take a guess at a couple, like the Buick nailhead. Interesting test of greasemonkey knowledge.

Re: Can you ID these engines?

18 for 18 and I am old enough that I can remember working on just about all of them. My first car was a 50 something Buick.....Nailhead V8 and I was about 14 or 15. I was going to learn how to work on cars by taking it apart......I didn't get very far before I broke stuff and the car went to the junkyard as it had a blown trans......I also worked in a restoration shop for a while and worked on way older engines than those 18.......

Re: Can you ID these engines?

100%. Damn, hadn't thought about how old I'm getting.

Took it a few days ago, got them all correct, although two were something of a guess, as I couldn't see what I was looking for clearly.

I got them all right, but guessed on the 348 question.Did not know the dip sticks were on opposite sides. So does any body know were someone could find the weights of engines.Would like to know the difference between 428 Pontiac and a 307Oldsmobile.

Thanks Travis for a trip down memory lane.

Phil,

You'll need to add a bunch to catch up. On the other hand, it will be a bad omen for me on the day when you start catching up!

Re: Can you ID these engines?

I missed 3 but what do I know about a 331, 360 Mopar and a 348 Chevy. All I know how to work on is an FE.

Re: Can you ID these engines?

Took the" test" on AOL.COM a couple of days ago -- got them all but I have admit to guessing on three or four of 'em.......... pretty neat stuff ! ! !

The Hawk 06-08-2008 03:20 PM

Re: Can you ID these engines?

I missed three, even surprised myself. Some of those were pretty odd looking.

BobUnkefer 06-08-2008 03:22 PM

Re: Can you ID these engines?

17 of 18. But I have to admit that that I used the S.W.A.G. method on a couple of them.
(S.W.A.G.,,,, Scientific Wild *** Guess,,,,, for those that were wondering)

Want a REAL test? Go to the website and click on 'Games' then take the AUTOMOTIVE HISTORY test...... makes the engine test look EASY....

Unk

Re: Can you ID these engines?

I got them all right, on two or three it wasn't because I knew what it was but I knew what it wasn't.

Most of them I knew just by their look, not because of where the spark plugs or the dipstick was. I have seen enough of them that it was kind of a photo gallery of old friends.

Re: Can you ID these engines?

100% correct. Took the exam on another site a couple weeks back!

Re: Can you ID these engines?

I saw this a couple of weeks ago. Got them all right, also.

Fun and games for old guys, I guess.

CycloneFE 06-08-2008 07:12 PM

Re: Can you ID these engines?

Got 17 of 18, I guess 50 means I am getting old. I had seen most of the engines that my father had or shown me at times and others were as some of you, I knew what it wasn't.

The 455 got me because I didn't look close enough. A lot of the engine compartments gave them away.

Hey Rusty, they didn't even give us a good FE, or SOHC to guess at. It was nice to see the pics of your car recently, I hope to see it in person some day.

Lots of fun!!

Re: Can you ID these engines?

17 right. I got one for your gearheads. What motor came in a early 60 Heavy Duty Chevy 10000 series truck?

Jeff---You are picking my brain but I,m gonna say either a 292 straight six or a 348 v-8-----What do I win???? Comp 387

Chuck Norton 06-08-2008 11:20 PM

Re: Can you ID these engines?

Rapid Robert Mulry,

Before the invention of the word "dirt," dirt itself had to be invented. I don't take credit for it but I was there.

Cheers,

Re: Can you ID these engines?

18 of 18. I had no idea about the dipsticks on the Chevys. I guessed on two. Fortunate at 38 to have worked on almost all of those at some time or another. Great fun.....young, old, or somewhere in between!
Thanks Travis.

Re: Can you ID these engines?

The Big Chev Truck came with a 322 in Buick special low compression, hi tork, low hp endurance motor. My brother and I had one that pulled a trailer dump with 20 tons of hot mix asphalt. Can you say Fuel Consumption?
