"Live" From The Columbus Points Race

We left tuesday night to drive to Greenwood In. to have the transmission of the motor home checked out. We have 205XXX miles on the truck and thought it would be good to have it looked at by professionals. We had an eight o'clock appointment wednesday morning with Reliable Transmission, an Allison dealer and service center.

Steve with Reliable started working on the truck as soon as I finished the paper work. He updated the ecu to the latest program, checked condition of the fluid, roadtested, and said the fluid and filter was not due to be changed until 260XXX. All of the work performed on time for less than the price of one new front drag tire. I would recommend them to anyone needing work done on their transmission.

Since Greenwood is the home of Ray Skillman Ford and everything else, we ran by there and had lunch with Ray and Bill. Thanks for lunch. They have a really good Cheesecake Factory in Greenwood. Then Larry took another tour of their Museum which has about any make of car and some really neat ones.

We then finally got back on the road and stopped at a rest area just inside Ohio to watch the news on TV. Larry fell asleep watching so we just ended up spending the night here. It is 8:20 now and we are still another half hour or so from leaving here. So by the time we stop and get fuel and maybe get the motorhome washed, the gates should be open. They are calling for thunderstorms up this way today, so we will give you more on the weather after we get there.

We are looking forward to another great race in Division 3!

Come by to see us!

Patsy, Keep an eye out for exit 59 in Springfield, That is the location of our Grandpas Garage. We would love a visit from you guys on your way through. We will be open at 10. Hope you can spare some time to stop.in. Dick Butler

Re: "Live" From The Columbus Points Race

Sorry Dick, we drove by the exit, but you know how it is--gotta get to the track and get parked!

We are here! Drove thru rain off and on on the west side getting here and it looks like it has about caught up with us. They are testing now and no rain yet. We are parked when you 1st come in to the track, the little partly gravel to the right of the pavement, so come on by.

Time for lunch!

Well, tech just opened up, but it is pouring rain! Glad we hadn't unloaded yet! I don't know if it is here to stay for the afternoon, but there is a chance of severe thunderstorms today and tonight.

Re: "Live" From The Columbus Points Race

Well it rained for an hour or so and then got muggy. It has cooled off some now hopefully enough so we can turn off the AC and sleep with the windows open.

We had a very enjoyable evening drinking a little beer and I have discovered a great drink. Bud Lite Lime a Rita. Tastes just like a margarita, but in a can and easy to make. Just go to the ice chest and get it out and pop the top! Bill Skillman grilled some great chicken and pork chops and we had some home grown tomatoes and cucumber salad, so now we are all full and ready to retire for the evening. Stock actually does not run first here, so we get to sleep in in the morning. I think super stock leads off!

We had lots of people come over and congratulate us on winning Norwalk. It is great to have such great friends. That is what this sport is all about!

Well more tomorrow. The weather looks a little iffy in the morning, but the rest of the weekend looks great!

I wish NHRA would have shown up earlier in central Ohio. It hasn't rained for weeks. If it does, it rains 10 minutes and quits....The farmers are celebrating the return of NHRA to Columbus!

Well it has stopped raining and super stock is in the lanes! It is still awfully cloudy though!

Re: "Live" From The Columbus Points Race

We are drowning down here, and we are trying to redirect it. 2 to 3 inches daily. But the proof in the pudding is salt water is running under the surface going North in the Mississippi. Good for fishing redfish, but usually only happens around Dec or January. That means it's dry. Yall get running up there. We need some gossip, inuendo, or just plain bs.

Re: "Live" From The Columbus Points Race

Super stock and super comp have run and super street has been called up. So stock is next! Lots of fast A/SA cars here--Johns, Boburka, Lynch!

Jeff we had lots of BSing going on last night, but I drank too many of those Lime a Ritas to remember what was said!

More later

Had a long delay, but once racing action got underway, things have been smooth. Tech went well and I swapped in some fresh C-11 (as before, the only thing I could buy at Bristol this weekend was VP-112, which is not on the accepted fuels list). Finished flushing the fuel system about time they called Super Stock. Still had to check tires etc, and by the time I got to head to the lanes they were probably on their third call. Even so, I was the first car in line. Gotta say, best 60' I've had in awhile, so hat-tip to the track crew!

Got to see some old friends (no pun intended, Lovins!), meet some new ones, and was able to congratulate Larry Hill in person for his Wally. I really look up to Larry. I have no choice, really! ;-) Also saw Greg and Andrew Hill, Ronnie Traupman and Aaron Allison (who is running his B/CM Vega in Super Street. I found a nice high n'dry (as recommended) on a gravel-based piece of grass right inside the gate.

The run itself was good on the tree and 60', yet still slower than Atlanta. Wind is creeping up. Traction was great. Track surface itself has a couple little dips and humps in the right, but not anything to upset a car my
speed.

SS Q#1 78.7 deg, 72%, 28.93, 3,145' DA

Re: "Live" From The Columbus Points Race

Stock just made their first run. 82 stockers. Looks like the rain is probably gone for the weekend. Sun has come out a little and it is a little windy and cooler. Everyone is supposed to still get 2 runs today. I don't know the exact order of stock qualifying, but # 1 is around .90 under. Up in the top is Johns, Andrew Hill, Beach, Witherspoon, Butner. Bill Skillman is in his 2013 Mustang. Adkinson did not get a good run. Nichols pulled off at the starting line. A couple of new Mustangs here I had not seen before. Skinner and Nick something and Mike something. I will know more when DRC puts up times.

Dick Butler 07-20-2012 08:47 PM

Re: "Live" From The Columbus Points Race

Did you say Skinner?

Larry Hill 07-20-2012 11:04 PM

Re: "Live" From The Columbus Points Race

Yes there is a Kevin Skinner in a BB/SA 10 Mustang here.

Well we are done for the day. It turned out to be a nice day overcast all day and cooler tonight. It was only 74 when we made our last run. Really nice. Coolest weather we have seen in a long time. It is supposed to be 87 tomorrow, but not near the humidity as today. We start out at 9 in the morning with superstock out 1st, then sc, sst, then stock and super gas. We run 1st round at 6 tomorrow, with super stock running at 2.

I have been lazy today and did not get out my camera. I will try to do better tomorrow!

Skinner's dad Mike owns a few businesses in the Columbus area and are a wonderful sponsor of many facets at Trails. Wonderful people, too. They wanted to get into class type racing, and thought the cobra jet program looked enticing. They bought Bill Howell's car after Bristol and are just getting started. Nice to have a new face in the Stocker ranks!u

Glad to see new people entering Class Racing. Good to have local support also. Best of Luck to Kevin and family.

I think Pacquet just made a good run a minute ago!

Well it is a beautiful day here in Columbus! Blue sky with a few clouds. Supposed to get about 86 today. Sure beats 103 like Chicago and Norwalk!

Super stock is running now. Everyone gets a run this morning then eliminations this afternoon. Dennis Breeden had trouble with his car yesterday. Hopefully he has it fixed this morning.

More later!

It's so nice that my wife has a jacket on in the shade. (That's not to say she's not nuts!) Actually is nice with the breeze.

Got to the track late ddue to a very slow and not exactly competent McDonald's this morning. They were running Super Stock before we even pulled into the track. Pulled in, hopped in the car and drove it straight to the lanes. (and there were STILL several cars that came in behind me! These guys are really not in a hurry to race, or maybe just not used to being first out). An official came through the lanes offering various special programs decals to any who didn't have them, and Hullinger came through to greet people. I mentioned that I've had some of my best 60's since backhalfing the car here, and he confirmed we're on VHT. Place is working great.

Cooler, less humid, and better barometer this morning. A good bit of shuffling on the ladder. I made some changes and was fortunate to land on the opposite side of the ladder from Volkman.

Really enjoyed talking with Larry Hill yesterday. I think half the pits came by at some time or another to congratulate him on Norwalk and say Hi.

Spectator lot is filling up too. Should be a fair crowd.

Re: "Live" From The Columbus Points Race

Just made our run for today. About 5 new cars came in today. I think Bo Butner took over #1. DRC should have everything up shortly. It is getting a little more overcast, but hopefully no rain today! I am going out to get some pics in a bit.

Great to see many of you again today at the track. Yes I do miss the action. Yes Melissa misses the action. Maybe we will team up again and bring something out to run in SS. Brian is so kid busy I bet he would STILL enjoy it too.
I am amazed we all look the same as 10-15 years ago.

Towards the top right of the page, under the page number, there is a "Rate Thread" drop down menu where you can rate threads from 1 to 5 stars. I will rate your thread now. :)
