Max Speed/under carb throttle atops.
My build is almost ready. I've used a linkage stop in past but I want to upgrade. The APD Max Speed carb is my first choice, 2nd would be their carb and plenum stop but I'm weary of the fuel going through the stop. This is the set up Luke Bogacki is running which gives me a little more confidence. 3rd choice would be 1# Stop and probably a APD, ATM or Stinnett 1050 carb. This set up is for a Super Street/Hot Rod car 505 BBC. Curious as to what other guys are running especially the Max Speed. ThanX

Re: Max Speed/under carb throttle atops.
Most I know that were running the Max speed have long sold it and those that I know running APD engines have their plate stop, NOT the Max speed.
I run a #1 electric stop and ATM carb on both my S/C dragster and S/ST Firebird |
Re: Max Speed/under carb throttle atops.
APD tends to push Max Speed carbs that are way too large for the engine application. I borrowed a early Max Speed 1050 a few years ago and had great success with it on a 582 engine . When I had them build me one they sent one that was much larger in CFM ,the consistency was not there and it had to be run at a much higher cruise RPM.
I now use a Stinnett baseplate stop from Number 1 Stop and a ATM carb built for my combination. Deadly consistent and absolutely the best fuel curve I've ever seen while on the stop. ATM also makes an excellent baseplate stop. |
Re: Max Speed/under carb throttle atops.
Tom Goldman I've watched the Stinnett videos on Luke Bogacki's site and the smaller carb theory seems the way to go. Brian at ATM was very helpful and so was Joey at APD. Since its a large $$ purchase, I only want to make it once..lol!! I still need a data logger also.

Order a Stinnett carb and then call Gary Heuer at Number stop to get a throttle stop. Gary Heuer is a great asset and so helpful.

I don't subscribe to the smaller carb theory and we have done very well. |
Re: Max Speed/under carb throttle atops.
I recently purchased a billet stop from #1 Stop.. it has all the bells and whistles as the Stinnet and APD stops.. Gary is great to deal with, will pre-set your stop to your combination, and will save you money over the other brands.. I also found the billet #1 Stop to have a bit more consistency over the #1 Cast Stop, which is also good if you don't want to spend for the billet stop.. #1 STOP is highly recommended..

Re: Max Speed/under carb throttle atops.
I’ve been running the max speed for a while. It takes time to get the jet/restrictors tuned but it’s deadly once you get it.

Re: Max Speed/under carb throttle atops.
my advice is don't go with it, go with a plate stop. Either #1, APD or ATM.

They don't and neither does a multi time, divisional winner, Jegs AllStar and top 3 in the world who accomplished all that with the Max speed as well as numerous other very accomplished racers who did and don't anymore.

Re: Max Speed/under carb throttle atops.
I have run the 1450 Max speed and it worked pretty good on my 622 with a lot of testing, then I switched to a 1150 Stinnett w #1 Stop, and that worked a little better w/ no testing. Now I'm running a Stinnett 1050 w/ #1 Stop and It's Awesome. (I didn't even adjust the idle on the 1050)
Both Gary's are great to work with, and answer their phones. For what its worth, I have had zero mph loss by going to the smaller carb. I can run the stop lower with the 1050 and have it come on sooner. I'm a big fan of the smaller carb. |
