Bleeding a hyd clutch
 

Not race related but hopefully someone can help. My son changed a clutch in a friends 94 Firebird 5 sp. It is hyd with a master and slave but no bleed provision. Manual says to stroke the slave with the hose end up but below the master. This has been done several times but still no full release. Can't get it in gear if started in neutral and if you start it in gear it creeps when the brake is released. Any thoughts?

Since there is no bleed at the slave, I take it you disconnect the slave and pump up thru the line. How do you then bleed the slave?

Nope. no bleeder on this one. If there was it wouldn't be the problem to bleed that it is.

this is gonna sound crazy but it works.
you need to take the air hose from your compressor and put the blow end on it, open the cap and cover it with your hand while putting just a smidge of air into the system pushing the fluid down to the slave cyl. and have some one else pump the clutch as fast as they can. it sounds lik the worst idea ever but it works. did the same thing on a bunch of s-10's and never had a problem. hope it helps.

Tried the air pressure and that didn't work. We hooked a vacuum pump up to the top of the reservoir and disconnected the braided hose swivel at the slave while submerged in fluid. Pumped the slave a few times keeping it under fluid. Also pumped fluid from the pan the slave was in up thru the master and out of the reservoir with the Mity Vac. Put the slave and line back together keeping it submerged in fluid thru the whole process. Still not enough travel in the slave cyl to disengage the clutch. My son gave up. I'm too stuborn. Still taking suggestions.

Quick followup. My sons friend took the firebird to a dealer. They replaced the Master, slave and reservoir with all new and still no full disengagement. Still think the new disc might be too thick. A Racer/friend at Valdosta this weekend said he has put 1 or 2 3/8 washers between the slave rod and fork to tighten up the throwout bearing and solved this problem a few times. Don't know if we will get to try this since it is still st the dealership.

i race a hyd. slave and have had more than my share of trouble the master cylinder will have a pressure relief valve in it . if the pressure plate has to much pressur it will go into bypass and not work

Stewart Are you sure someone didn't machine the flywheel, because if they did you may need a shim behind it . Mike
