Yes, he has spent a lot of time with the Bogners. But, there is nothing exotic or trick in that motor, just lots of attention to detail. Mike is pretty much the sharpest guy in the country on Slant Six motors. (Not that the country is overrun with them) :D

And I noticed on mike's trailer he the first member of the slant
6 drag club or something like that. who knew there was
enough demand for such a thing ??
And curious how many club members there are ?

His blue Valiant was the first Slant door car in the 10's. He went as fast as 10:05 but never made the 9 Second Club. The 9 Second Club has 4 members at this time. There were quite a few 10 second cars. Slant racing is pretty popular in the northwest and southeast. There are a few cars scattered around the Midwest, but not like it was 10 years ago.

My natural class is U, didn't stay there long when the 302 Fords got their big gift.
Hopefully anyone that builds a 4.3 wants to go fast and get some HP.

How is a young kid that doesn't have parents or a relative that races stockers going to learn the art of engine blueprinting and all the rest of the stuff that takes years to learn to be competitive or the money to do it ? Don't forget the truck to haul it and the trailer to put it on, the travel money, hotels etc, etc etc. It was a lot easier to do when I started out in 1966 with a $45 car and a mentor and we didn't travel any where to race.

I just happen to have a 1964 Valiant, slant 6, factory 4 speed car sitting in the garage. I looked at building it but at 145hp it's no where near competitive but the curious thing is that a Mopar magazine built a slant six: raised the compression two points, blue printed, hotter cam and some carburetor work, threw it on a dyno and if I remember correctly it made 45hp at the rear wheels. 100hp less than in the guide, how could it ever compete when it's factored 100hp more than it makes when modified? Maybe some of the other early sixes are in the same boat with bloated hp figures?

JimR

Edit: it made 75 hp not 45 hp
