Re: The Present Points system to win the World Championship

When we (the NHRA Members) gave away our proxy ('81,'82?) we gave away our souls. We didn't even sell them.

So... Why and how did that happen?

All of the members were sent a letter asking if we wanted to keep our voting rights or "trust" the BOD. A letter that was "ignored" ( not responded to) was counted as a vote to "trust" the BOD. There was no internet back then.

Not sure where you get 14 events Don to contend for a World Championship. They take your best 3 out of 5 Nationls and best 5 out of 7 Divisionals. So you could contend with only 8 events attended, but most attend at least 12 to get the most points by getting rid of the lowest points from early round losses.
Divisional Championship is determined by your best 5 out of your,,first,,8 Divisionals attended in a row,but they only allow 2 out of Divisionals to count. Anyone running for either Championship will have to travel. This year with Division 1 having only 6 events,,you'll need to travel a little to get the other 2 if you need more points. If you look at all the previous Champions,,most had to travel especially the World Champion.

You are forgetting that you have to travel to 8 divional races to accumulate enough grade points to enter the national events in most cases. Unless you don’t plan to run any national events the following year. So 8 divisional and 5 nationals would be 13.

For 2023:
National Championship:
Each driver in COMP, SS, STK, SC, and SG is eligible to compete for points at eight divisional and six national events.

A driver’s best five divisional and best three national finishes from their eligible points-earning events will constitute their NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series national championship points total.

That's 8 + 6 = 14 where points can be earned.

Have they changed this for 2024?

Your forgetting that you can earn grade points at Nat. Opens as well.

And most Divisions offer a Divisional and National Open together so if someone plans wisely,,you can get 2 grade points at 2 events on the same weekend. I think a couple Divisions do it twice a year,,so you could get 8 grade points on 4 weekends.

I learned something today,,don't know where I got the best 3 out of 5 National events. I just checked and you guys are right,,best 3 out of 6. But,,needless to say,,With the current requirements if a Driver wants to contend for either Championship,we have to travel. Linda and I are sooo fortunate that we are able to travel the way we do.
