Re: I want to go Stocker Racing

Tar Heal knows my car well. We were part of ISSCA. A huge Impala SS Club.

My 1995 Impala SS runs G/PS. But raced in brackets for about 15 years.
Making sure the engine was correct for the class.
Had Jeff Warren build an engine for the car 190k mile car.

Over the years rebuilt and reinforced everything on the car.
It has run a best of 12.88/8.15 on a cold air day at Cecil County Dragway.

However I drive my car to all the IHRA races. It has AC hooked up.
It is wonderful on those hot summer days going back to the pits.
Recently 8 hour drive to Darlington, SC from Germantown, Md.

There is more in the car to catch the Mustangs in the same class.
Going to make more changes this Winter.

One of these days I will find a place to park a car trailer.
There is a really nice aluminum one for sale on Class Racer ads.
Until then it will run exceeding the 4300 lb minimum for the class.

Btw take a look at the Pure Stock pictures in the Photo Gallery.
You will not be disappointed.

Yes, I agree with you. Good point. It does cost money to go as fast as you can and be the quickest. My additional point was that Pure Stock is a nice alternative. We haven't maxed our car out, run "off the shelf street" parts, and still are able to run almost 1 under. There aren't too many cars in each class and seem to be geographically spread out so the chances of a heads-up race are slim. I don't remember seeing one on DRC ever. Yes, we could spend another $15K+ to go 1.5 under but what's the point. What my original point was is that in NHRA Stock Eliminator it's about impossible to do it cheap. All the combinations have been twisted out, HP added, there's no more favorable AFHS unless it's a $100K+ new factory car, and with the popularity of NHRA class racing you're almost certain to go heads-up somewhere so you better bring lots of money. We don't face those issues. Heck, for the little investment we have (yes, the original car was expensive but we chose that) we could set an IHRA national record any time we want but I've never had the heads off the car and honestly don't know that I could get it all back together with just my wife and I in a teardown barn at a track.

If I lived near Charlotte, NC with all the IHRA tracks and events that they have locally I've never run anything but IHRA and would start out in Pure Stock and most likely stay there unless I won the lottery.

The Pure Stock class seams very doable . Still leaning towards building the car . Paint body, engine, wiring ,plumbing, I can do by myself.trans and roll cage I will not attempt. I can tig and mig pretty good and do lots of fab work but still not that confident . I'm very meticulous when I do things , so what ever car I buy I'm gonna end up re painting and doing it to my likings . A roller with a good cage will work fine. The Camaro on racing junk looks like it would work, white with orange stripes,! I think he wants 5,500 rolling . Right now I can't do that , need to sell present car. Although this thread is very interesting . IHRA book on the way as well.

Re: I want to go Stocker Racing

Seems to be a growing pent up demand to run Pure Stock.
Been getting a more frequent call or emails every week regarding Pure Stock and other details.

This incudes the new cars coming out of Detroit and Imports.
Too bad NHRA Classification Guide is way behind adding the new cars to the Guide.

IHRA Marketing should take the bull by the horns and do it themselves.
Get the Guide updated and then add the Imports.
Guarantee participation will improve.

Unfortunately so would the cranky complaints that imports are competing.
No different than gripes about Pro Stock, Crate Motors, John Force ect.
Just part of racing.

Again the unexpected calls and emails have all been fun.
Economy is slowly coming back and Pure Stock is a cool way to jump in to Class Racing.

Corbitt's Camaro is turn-key and already runs under the index. It has nice pieces in it and could go further under with a little work. He only has quality stuff.

I also looked at that car. Nice piece from the pictures. That $5500 price is sans the good 12 bolt. Even at $8500 with the good rear, that's a good car. My wife even told me to get it, if I really thought I wanted it. Even she likes it.

Being a Pure Stock car, I don't have many close IHRA tracks. The combos in this part of the country, except for Jeff Ross Ohio series aren't real IHRA car friendly. Some, like Ohio Valley in Louisville, allow Crate stockers and SS/Production cars. Nothing else. Bowling Green won't allow IHRA cars at all. Here in Indiana it's a wasteland in regards to class racing, nobody does it. I class my Achieva in the IHRA FWD class but it has yet to sniff the index. Relatively speaking, I haven't spent any real money on it either.

Back to the Camaro. If you could find the money to swing it. If you are in proximity to a few IHRA tracks. Buying that car would not be a bad start.

I've been hooked on the Stocker Class for a few months now. After walking around Z Max this weekend and watching them ,I'm hooked.
A bit about myself before I get smashed, cause I usually go on YB!!I bracket raced for a bit in the 90s and got out of it.I own. 1972 Chevelle ,back halved with a 565 in it.Due to family life and my career I put it on hold.I just retired and we moved down here last October from L.I. NY.Another reason that I stayed away from racing is the haul to any track took for ever.Im just finishing up a shop at my house. My plan is to finish my car and sell it.As per wife I can only have
one race car !! I don't blame her.
I was leaning towards a mid 12 sec class,J/S or K/S class to start out with.I met some cool/ super smart guys with some great info at the track.I am not gonna build a car from scratch.I most likely will purchase someone's unfinished project I worked in a restoration shop for about 15 years so I know a few things.
I'm leaning towards Nova's 66-70 right now with a small block.
Like I said I'm new to this so don't bash me.Sorry for the long winded story.

Do not feel that way.
We got your back on your new quest.

If was going to build another pure stocker,I would build late model car LT-1 LS1 etc.

I'm glad we went this route. The combination is very favorable with a soft AFHS. Pretty easy to make these cars run ... especially in the Corvette.
