No four links, no cam or manifold but both can be non stock and massaged.I am sure the research to set up manifold, suspension and cam specs would be very close to SS parts to start with. For the entry level idea a truely new Stock class with SET rules or spec parts could be started with limited classes for competition like the new cars and EVERYONE could restart at a much cheaper level if they wanted. S and SS could be one class for a small investment by current stockers compared to the overall cost of keeping up with the rules of StK.
Running Stock "parts" and rules should be a significantly less cost than stepping up to SS. If making it "stock" with massaged parts is about the same money then it is not a meaningful difference in classes.
Keep it more simple in the future..

That sounds like 1972 all over again and look what has happened !

That seems very reasonable.By the time you buy valves, retainers, springs,do all of the machine work, etc.

This is a pair of heads on Ebay right now that I use. These are just the bare cores.

Woodro I wasn't going to mention your name. LOL However, I did find a shop locally who is finishing up a set that I should pick up today. My problem is that the rules keep changing and I'm not willing to jump through those hoops. The heads I buy today may be obsolite tomarrow. You can have any valve train aftermarket part but, roller rockers. Where's it going to end.

Stock was designed to be the grass roots class for beginers. I was starting a father/son project (more father than son, maybe he saw the light before me) where I could spend some quality time on a project with him. NHRA stock is far beyond our means. How could we ever compete with the Pro's. Now I hear Don Garlits want to run a stocker. I'ts just not reasonable.

I will say that through this fourm I have learned a lot about the new eara of drag racing and I have met a lot of nice people Dean Oliver, Mike Voth, and Aaron Leown the list can go on and on. One question I did have though... is that "Have a Good Day" Bobby Baker a real person or an imposter who likes to get on here and piss everyone else off. Sorry Bobby but I had to get that one in. LOL I enjoy reading all of your posts too.

Just try to pick a class that Garlits or one of the other pro-sportsman aren't in. Then you can focus on your driving, not how much they spent to go "very" fast.

As for getting back to "stock" Stock, we all know that many OEM parts are difficult to find, expensive and in some, but not all cases, superceded anyway. And that would require tech to spend more time and effort to enforce more details which, unfortunately, they are trying to get away from and likely won't reverse their course.

When NHRA poured heads for SS They didn't take into account different valves. On my 72 340 stock heads with flat valves the cc's are bigger than spec with the tulip valve they are smaller. I talked with Bruce about this a few years ago. I would have to fill a stock port to make them meet the spec. I have 20 sets of stock unmolested 340 heads

Are 3/8" stem Mopar valves that are necked down in the bowl area legal in NHRA? That would alter the volume also.

Another one Rod is the 894 casting 2.020" valve 340 head, how does that pour 2 c.c.'s LESS than the 587 casting 1.880" valve 360 head with the same port geometry?

X-tech man? I know that if a "pure" stock class of new cars were started again some kind of evolution would take place in the next 30 years again. Do you agree with the similarity involved with Stk and SS today?Maybe since I have not actually had a Stock class car I am missing the expensive differences. How would you "restart" or preserve the entry level position of a Stock class?

YES...Except..there not as much workable oem-parts for old muscle cars this time around..there are cases that good virgin heads are more expensive than "massaged one's"..everyone dosent run Chebbie's where it's possible to buy new parts and also are allowed to alter combustion chamber and piston to make them work in "Stock"!
