What is the Sportmans Spectacular?

I do not like that name btw..hoekie sounding !!

I remember National Races being call normal names..
Like Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring Nationals as very key National Events

Wish we could get back to those names instead of all the stuff before the names.

Dan

You mean "What WAS the Sportsman Spectacular."

I thought the name was appropriate, and it included the track/location it was being held at.
But what it "was" was a $5,000 to win + contingencies for ALL classes across the board regardless of entries. To cover their butt, IHRA did include a "re-entry" round, where 1st losers ran a seperate round before those winners went on to round two. But at least one had to "earn" it as opposed to a simple "buy-back" into round 2. However, IHRA did offer the incentive that if there were 64+ cars in round one, there would be no "re-entry" round. Entry was $200.00, which was reasonable and those were one of the "Win, your in" races as a TOC qualifier. It was the IHRA version of a Sportsman Nationals. No Pro's or booked in shows.

Unfortunately, they never got over 64 cars at any of the Sportsman Spectacular races and got burned real bad at San Antonio when only a handful of cars showed up - literally! So they appear to have been discontinued for 2013 as there has been no mention of them.

It was over 100 degrees there last year. I think that had alot to do with participation at Clay City.

by the way, did you see that Greg Miller has signed an agreement to run PRP?

NOTE to ALL racers that the D-1 Open in Montreal, QC will be the weekend before the Epping divisional. Please try to make it to this great racing event and facility. Testing on Friday, 6+ Qualifying Runs on Saturday with a Gamblers race and a 1 Run best light with a win race, 1 Time Shot Sunday morning then Eliminations for $10,000.00 to the winner! Epping is about 4 hours away and you could roll it into a mini vacation for the three or so days off in between events, great beaches, entertainment and food in Epping or Montreal. Hope to see you all there.

I'm at a lost for words. I don't understand how a IHRA racer (Dan Fahey), That races IHRA div 1 and 9 did not know what a Sportsman Spectacular was.

I'm curious about the Div 2 race(s) at Darlington over Labor Day.....is this a two race weekend?

I'm kind of suprised there aren't more '2 races in one weekend' events in Div 9. Seems like it would work pretty well as most Div 9 racers live in or near NC and travel/distance isn't that great for most.

Michael, I think it may also have something to do with the large number of tracks in Division 9 that could hold a Summit Pro-Am event. The idea behind the "double" weekends was for those that that had to travel longer distances to save transportation and lodging expenses. I'm interested to see what the run schedule looks like for the single races in Division 9 that are being held on 3-day weekends.

Chris is right the heat prompted many of my friends to stay at home that weekend. As I remember it was still over 100 degrees when we were called to the lanes for our first time trial and that was after 7pm. They had tried a few passes earlier but the track was too greasy for even the low HP cars. The IHRA officials didn't have many choices. They opted to finish day one Sat. night and started and completed the 2nd race early the next morning. In terms of a wake up call, there is something to said for an eight o'clock pass down race track rather than another cup of coffee.

Also it was on Friday eve June 29th(same week end) that a freak wind storm devastated much of Ohio, WV and Vir. Many rigs at Clay City track suffered wind damage that afternoon. I was fueling up at MT. Sterling Ky when the storm hit and we had to dodge downed trees across I-64 on way to the track. When I returned home much of the county was without power for over a week.
