Re: Greatest Engine Builders of the 60's....
Any other votes for Arlen Vanke?
As an Akron guy, He is the only one I knew back then, and he was good enough that you never had to look for better He did work on my cars from the 60's to the 90's and they all ran far better when he got done with them. Most of mine werent for the sactioned events. Some were street racers, and later, some were grudge match racers at the local track *Dragway 42. I always had the ability, learned from me by my Son Chris, to get people all riled up, and then when I beat them with a smile, they were always still convinced that I only got lucky, and they could get me the next time. Chris could also get folks hot and bothered, and then let them down, and laugh with them But Vanke's "Unbeatable Mopars" left a mark on a lot tracks in the 60's. David The New Hemi Guy |

Re: Greatest Engine Builders of the 60's....
Some one recently asked me why I had not signed in on this thread yet, so here goes, so many of the racers back in the 60's and 70's were multi-taskers. They built engines not only for their cars but for other racers. They built the engines, built the cars and raced the cars very successfully. The list would be a long one. Everyone who has been previously mentioned is a top choice.
Bill Jenkins, Jake King, Hubert Platt, Herman Lewis, Dave Christie, Billy West, Bobby Warren, Garley Daniels, Bob Banning, Charlie and Jeff Taylor. Many of these people are already in various Drag Racing Halls of Fame and many more rightly deserve to be included. Volumns could be written about the many successful engine builders of those days and the inovations they brought to the sport of drag racing. Problem is like much of our history of drag racing is being lost as we all grow older and pass on. Only what we post on these web sites and what we pass on to younger generations will keep the history alive. The history through the archives of NHRA has been lost. Look at the historic race cars when you have a chance to see them up close and un-restored and see the things the people mentioned on the tread and many not yet mentioned built and raced. |
