Re: "Live From" Summernationals - Englishtown, NJ
Nascar and NHRA don't get it. They raised prices when the ecomomy was good and business was booming. Aimed for a higher class / wealthier patron and they got them for a while. But they were fair weather / newbies, had their fill, been there done that and moved on.
But prices have stayed the same, and the stands show it. Notice TV coverage of any NASCAR or NHRA race, they do their best not to show the stands. I guess the TV money makes up for empty stands. But it's hard to sell hot dogs, t-shirts, etc. to an empty seat! |

It was no bargain on Friday at $43.00 a head either.

Ever notice that the main stands in nascar look like confetti? When the camera pans by fast its hard to tell that the seats are empty.

Re: "Live From" Summernationals - Englishtown, NJ
I had some time in between rounds at the Divisional and National event at Las Vegas this year. I drove around and looked at the NASCAR track. I thought the stands were packed, but they were not racing. I went into the infield and looked at the stands. The seats are painted red, white, and blue in what looks like a random pattern, and there were no spectators. When you are farther away you would swear that there are people on the seats. Some computer guru must have come up with a pattern to make it look like there are people in the stands. Now I pay attention when I watch NASCAR at the large tracks. If I look carefully I can see that a lot of the stands are empty, but the paint scheme makes it look like people are sitting in them. This works especially well in the overhead shots. I bet if you look closely you will be able to see this too.

The Summernationals were always hot, and if they were to look at a calander, it is still Spring. I went from '71 until we moved to Fla. in '81 and it was always PACKED and hot. What I saw on t.v. today as far as spectators were concerned was shocking, but at those prices, not really. I also do not remember hearing very many commericals on the radio for this race, and since we have verizon for cable t.v., I didn't see one, just the normal lawyer/car dealer localy targeted types.

Burger $5, small fry $3, small drink $3, $11 per person, or $44 for lunch for a family of four. Assuming the (food) prices are still the same nine years later, admission plus lunch is close to two hundred bucks for a family of four (depending on how old the kids are). I know ticket prices vary by age, and by day of the event. But a family of four, for four days, how much are they going to have to spend? Plus gas/tolls to get there, motel, etc etc. |

Re: "Live From" Summernationals - Englishtown, NJ
I can only speak as a fan since I don't race. My father started taking me to e-town in 1985 and think I have only missed maybe 3-4 since. E-town is like a second home and my happy place every year. I have expanded to 3 days now so I can see more sportsmen racing. This year I had a buddy with me who is a passing tv race fan. First 53 bucks isn't too bad for the full day, yes it is high but a movie is 10-12 bucks. The problem is nhra isn't using the power they have to drive people to the track. Tv coverage should be used to get people to the live show. My friend didn't realize there where so many classes and it was fun*explaining all the classes and differences between them all. I actually enjoyed the 11.50 class it was cool loved the big pontiac. We as drag racing fans have to get out and invite new people to the track make them see what it is all about.

My wife and my youngest son and I went to the 4-Wides, which IS 12 hours from my house. I left on Thursday and went home on Monday and it cost me around $1300. And I tried to do it "cheap"!
