Re: What would U change @ IHRA
I haven't forgotten 1988 or 9-11,Billy Meyer was disliked as much as Bin Laden by IHRA class racers That's probaly why he had to move IHRA to Waco ,Tx. cause Bristol probaly was'nt a safe place for him to be.Billy Meyer dropped stk.,S/S and Modified in 1988, replaced w/.90 classes 7.90-12.90 was bad move.I remember back then alot of guys were diehard IHRA and wouldn't even consider racing NHRA so, SCRA was started had Moroso,I remember as one sponsor,Had race@MT Park ClayCity,Ky. Meyer got out I think had a group racers/investors?Carlton Phillips,Jim Ruth,Sonny Leonard,Ted Jones maybe? bought it moved back
to bristol put all back like it was then no class cars were showing up all were mad &racing with SCRA (sportsman class racers association). Ted Jones was one of owners ,I think, but he made deal to buy SCRA and "merge" with IHRA , no one has seen it since. 10.5 class put in modified, Have traditional mod/comp type classes maybe add some of "fastest street car classes" but this goes against my traditional class racing beliefs. Mike Taylor 3601 I keep hear NHRA&IHRA say class car counts are strong I know we could be dinosaurs Knowledge of class racing has fell severe last 20 years average racers/fans don't even know we exist.Went to IHRA pro am @MT.Park 3-5 tech guys, Hank Blakenship was only one there I know has any class knowledge, others I don't know if they even knew whatStk.S/S was not being negative towards them I just felt they didn't know class, they looked @safety stuff that was it. |
Re: What would U change @ IHRA
Ya'll keep asking for a mod or a 10.5 class. They will never work because of CUBIC DOLLARS. You will have 1 or 2 dominate and run everyone off.
T/S and T/D are here to stay even NHRA is running them now. Fans like them because they are fast. Chip |
Re: What would U change @ IHRA
Not much of fan of anything but class racing It's the way it was and I liked it that way.LOL!Greg sure got lot of discussion going. It's fun to say what we would do if we were in charge but no way no how would I want be in that position or be tech man. I don't want to see anyones class, took away as long as they have high winding stick, lets keep it.LOL! I love drag racing always have always will ,all classes, categories etc..
Mike Taylor 3601 PS. Chip did you win 11.90 or 12.90 championship in 1988? Some reason that popped in my head or was Chip Somebodyelse? |
Re: What would U change @ IHRA
You can’t save a sinking ship. Their lack of fire safety equipment at pro am is just stupid. The last points race in div 5 the news chopper was at the track before the fire team and if that person would not have be able to get out himself he would have burned to death. That is just inexcusable. The lack of tech at IHRA meets. Hank is great, one of the best but he needs to be able to train four to five more guys that know what to look for. When other racer can see people cheating you have a problem. This is why IHRA has such a bad rap. People can live with crate motor cars and other crazy class cars like that, but when you have bigger issues like the ones above you will never succeed.

I would like to applaud myself for finding a creative way to say what I wanted to say without really saying it - like one of those read in between the lines type things ;) Some of you know what I'm talking about - ha ha.

Re: What would U change @ IHRA
Chip I was not just talking about running at night at the Rock at that time of the year.I know it gets slick late in the season it is during the summer when at 8pm they stop or even 9 and there are still several good hours when they could run sportsman especially when they know it is going to rain the next day and the sportsmen take it in the *** by racing late sunday when they could have run friday and saturday night after the pros

Re: What would U change @ IHRA
I know this is tough, but, schedule around the NHRA races. More quarter mile tracks. Eliminate Bracket racing(not that I have anything against Bracket racing, just a time concern) at National events, to draw more cars in Stock and Superstock(hopefully).
I like the way the IHRA parks racers at National events. First come, first serve. |

If bracket racing at a national event creates future class racers(it did for me) then consider increasing it. Limit it to footbrake only? Make it fun.......stick bracket? Now that I would pay to watch, and play at. How about having cars with similar dial ins run each other a-la pinks all out? It would be a bit of a bear to administer, but with say 80 cars you could pair them up, and closer to heads up runs would be fun for all. Bracket to start....Fans would enjoy it. Once the schedule is done, keep it. Toronto may have been a mess, but it would have been good to see. I know there were circumstances beyond control, but perhaps a alternate site could have been secured. I hope that hosting a national event is a $ maker for the tracks. Skyview's reschedule date after the rain-out was fine, I planned around it and booked a B&B, but not the week after! I would add bracket racing to the pro-ams to increase the car counts and $ for the tracks. Just like they did with some of the national events. I know NED will likely not do a Pro-Am due to low car counts, but I would love to see one there. Eric Merryfield |
Re: What would U change @ IHRA
I guess I get to be the 101st post on this......................................
There are many things that I would change about both NHRA and IHRA,but some will not even try IHRA. They could have FREE entry with an ironman and $1000 cash to ALL first round losers, and many would still stay home and complain about the looks of the trophy.I look at NHRA and IHRA like Coke and Pepsi.I don't really prefer either one,but when you are thirsty, they both can quench your thirst. |
