Re: Ppp shifter clean and relube?

My PPP shifter has been acting up on the 1-2 shift going past 2nd so disassembled it either it needed maintenance or was worn out

The original lube was full of dirt cleaned it all off everywhere

Don't mess with the handle unless you have some patience.
Used Super Lube silicon grease as the assembly lube
Soaked the cable in trans fluid for a few days
Re installed making sure alignment and adjustment are as instructed.

Initially my impression was the spring that pushed the rod/disc up needed to slow down but with bench testing and in the car before and after the shift lever needed to speed up. That must be why PPP states most problems are in the cable.

Signman,

I assume you fixed your issue?

Must be a PPP shifter thing, never had an issue with the Turbo Action shifter in my Firebird no mind the OEM shifter in my Chevelle.

OP's question said 'visibly there?s a bit of a build up of crud on the shifter mechanism. Will give it a clean, what are you guys using to relube it?'

If mine had a build up of crud on it, I would clean it too. A thin film of grease, maybe a synthetic like Amsoil would be fine, but would attract dirt, requiring it to be cleaned again at some point..

A dry film lube should also be okay. Not a lot of pressure on those parts. just need to work smoothly.

Perhaps an upgrade is called for. Looks like a lightweight cable with standard Morse ends. Should not be hard to accomplish.

If you know where Winters/TA Cheetah shifters originated, you understand they were intended to work in crappy, dirty environments.

They are functional, built to take a beating, but nothing precision about them.

yea the B&M shifter in my dragster ain't been cleaned nor relubed either, that too must have been built "to work in crappy, dirty environments"

Frankly, IMO, this thread is ridiculous! If a little crud on your shifter mechanism causes you to lose sleep then wipe it off and go race. Further, if you feel a relube is necessary too, chose your favorite lube, grease, oil and just dab it for christ sake. If you must be told what lube to use, IMO you don't belong behind the wheel of a race car but you could call the manufacturer and ask!

If the thread is ridiculous why pay any attention to it.
Seems some have issue with dirt in their shifter myself being one we are only trying to help one another not judge.
When you're forced to pit on grass, dirt and stone dust is inevitable particularly from quads and carts.
Yes the TA shifter would not be affected until the cable wears out.

Sold mine since it would shift into high if my hand was on the handle due to the gate and spring set up. It's fine with air or electric auto shift not so great with 3 speed and manual shift. There would be no issue either way with a glide.

Wrong, I've made thousands of 2-3 shifts with my Turbo Action shifter in the Firebird without issues!

Ed,
You get exactly what you deserve!
I did try to ring the manufacturer before I put the post up, it rung out.
They way I look at it, whatever they used was a good choice, wasn?t causing trouble, good enough for me to reuse!
Thought someone on here may know, been a few threads about these shifters.
I did end up getting through and found out what I wanted..
Don?t belong behind the wheel of a race car?
Ed, you’re a **…itt!
Paul
