78-83 Malibu's all have different nose/grill AND taillights, make sure they match or a savvy tech guy will ding you. The elco's have different nose/grill for each year until the later ones but the rear bumper and taillights are all the same which also applies to the wagons, all the same. You cannot use after market nose, it must be the original pieces including any spoilers. The 305 4bbl combo is tuff, there a lot of them running (Camaro/Firebird) and the fast ones are really fast. The 79 Malibu 305 carry's 5 HP more than the others, thanks to Billy Lynn ;-)

So is the '78-'79 350 4-barrel combo not as tough? Would that be a better choice?

Currently running I/SA ...with a junk engine and a less than optimal track surface it still managed a 1.50 60' that evening.

79 305 4-bbl is good at 235. There are a couple of Arkansas boys that run fast with that combination in hardtop bodies carrying 243hp. The 80-83 small cam 305 engines are also good at 230, and the 84 is at 229. The 83-87 big cam 305s will take more work and $$. The 78-79 350 is good if you will run it as a manual trans; probably better in a SW.
