qwiked,,, yeah, those were the days at the old Fallnationals. The reason so many of those sportsman racers made the trek to Seattle back then was because of the Grace Cup,, a prestigious award given out after a season of points earning to racers in Comp, Superstock and Stock all going for the same cup, sponsored by the Grace Corporation. We deffinately got to see the cream of the crop back then,, many of them we would never had seen otherwise. I remembered I burned a lot of film back in those years. It was great.

You are correct Carl it was SS/O because we ran SS/P back in those days...

As I recall the story Ingersol had changed the trim to a 72 model and the same engine used a slightly smaller valve, which he had installed. So, even after the hit on the 71 he would have still been able to run SS/O. I think they put HP on the 72 combination on the spot in tech and told him he had to run SS/N. Now all of these "facts" could be out of whack since it was 35 years ago. But, maybe someone else may know something about that deal.

You are correct. I was standing in the sidelines when Farmer told the tech guy (Xakellis IIRC) that the '72 Olds now had the same hp as the '71. Buddy had kind of smarted off to Farmer and Farmer never liked a smarta$$.

Its to bad Farmer isnt still doing the HP factoring today. I can think of a few combos that could use some HP.

3 pages of response to the best Olds Super Stock of all time and no one has even mentioned Bob Dennis !!! Bob still has 3 Super Stock cars and I may be wrong but I think that 2 of them still have Oldsmobile engines in them. I also think that the Olds that he won Indy with a couple of years ago had a 307 Olds power plant. I dont see or talk to Bob as much as I use to but I think what I stated is accurate.

Allen,

I was thinking of that very thing while working this morning. In fact, had we not bought the Cutlass we eventually sold to Dennis Ridgeway, we probably would have bought Randy Mans Achieva that Bob Dennis now owns. I always thought that Randy's Achieva was one of best working and nicest GT cars of the time. I know Bob was impressed with it once he started to run it.

The Achieva didn't need the mad-dog approach that Ingorsoll applied to the '72 Cutlass, but it may have been a better car. It was killer when Randy had it. I think Bob has backed off of it a bit, but I have no doubts it's still a killer car if need be.

Ezra Beachy told me he built a 70 Olds 442 455 for Super Stock and he couldnt get it to run the index no matter what he tried. (Yes before the head porting rule). Then he put it all back together for stock class and it ran way under. Those engine with the 6 degree?? valve angle just dont like to flow with RPM like you need to make power on the top. There is a reason they were the premiere engine for tree stump puller applications. Small bore, big stroke, small heads=average horsepower, high torque not what you need in Super Stock. Pontiacs are bad enough, Buicks with their big bore smaller strokes are better.
