I sure would love to see an 81 T/A with a turbo 301 in SS/PA with a real intake and exhaust and a trans with a brake. Sounds like #1 qual. at Indy to me. I wouldn't drive it there though as it will probably be going home in a basket.

I am considering building a Pontiac. My '69 is only competitive with other '69's. Few if any '69's can run with RJ's Ford and the Dusters. I can't afford to put a big block in it. I may find that I can't afford a Pontiac either since I am accustomed to SBC cost. Their are a couple of SBC combo's that are competitive,(Greg Hill's '70) I may be forced to chose one of those due to cost. The Pontiac's seem to have an advantage at present. See the Burton's, Todd Hoven, Leo Glassbrener(spelling?), etc. I have learned a lot from Woodro, Jim Lewis, and Jeff Stealy so I am ahead of the learning curve on some things about a Quadjet, Metric trans, etc. If the Pontiac thing doesn't work, then I may need to consider the LT1's and LS1's. If all that fails then I will try to be one of the faster '69's.

i purchased 80/81 trans am stocker this spring, may not have money to race, will consider selling. this is neil smedley's old national event winner and old record holder. complete car, can deliver for the right deal. is any one interested? 301 turbo engine and auto trans. thanks, terry

Are you looking for a combo to qualify well or win races? If your goal is to win, there is no doubt a late 90's early 2000's Firebird is the way to go.

Each combo has it's advantages. If you qualify #1, you can get a bye which always helps. Plus if you're the fastest in your class any heads up run is usually a win.
The 2000/later cars are good combos but must run the Mustangs and DP's. The higher classes also get to leave second and make it easier to drive the finish line.

I'm pretty sure Richard was asking about real Pontiac V8s.
He already has a Chevy.

Some other considerations might be:

68 350 now that it is refactored to 305
71-72 455
74 LeMans 350 (like Bill Rink's Ventura only at 250)

I suspect that several more are good combinations with the valve job rule and current valve train technology, but $$ and the small Pontiac population have kept the development stifled.

The `68 350 needs another 10 hp taken off to make it competitive.
