Tommy,

I'll look you up as soon as I win the lottery. :-)

I'd love another FI car ( I love their predictable repeatability), but right now we're dealing with a car that is already owned and is a proven race car, just trying to determine what engine to drop in that makes the most sense for stock instead of crate motor. Trying to think things through for both competitiveness and economical engine application (yea I know, what's economical about a drag race engine)
350/295 with a glide or a 396/350-325 with a 3 spd are the choices it seems.
Wouldn't mind a 4 speed, but damn, it's been since the early 80's when I last rowed my way through a gearbox,,,,, AHRA SS 289 4 spd Mercury Comet,,,, and I think things have changed some since then (mild understatement there).

Anyways, there is a lot of experience that visits this sight and I was/am looking for input from the experienced masses.
We've got a rolling, working chassis with fresh driveline pieces, just need to determine the powerplant.

While there is certainly no concensus of opinion, the opinions that have been expressed are all appreciated for the experience that is lending it's hindsight.

I just want to get back behind the wheel,,,,,, it's tough being @ EVERY NHRA national event and WATCHING stock run week after week after week from the fence @ the end of the track. Jason and I have watched a lot of rounds this year (and critiqued a lot of racers/races :-) ), but then he gets to race later in the day in his Ultimate Stocker (P/S)

Thanks guys, it is appreciated!

If you want to go consistantly 1.15 under I wouldn't go with a 350 or 327.
350 vs. 327 it's a wash.
If you want to talk more about this you can call me.

So you would go with a ??????????

396-325 should be a decent combo in D/SA,usually not "a ton of cars" in D

Now THAT engine would probably need a little freshening,,,,,,, although I am fairly sure that the block is well seasoned by now :-)

I just want to say I love this conversation. I get so bored with the bickering so common to other threads. The topic here is what stock racing is all about and what this website is all about.

Thanks Bruce! Over 3400 hits tells me there is some interest here as well.

Hey, I'm just trying to learn.
I understand a lot about the sport, but trying to think through a stock eliminator build is all new to me. Just trying to do it as intelligently as possible,,,,, although there are some who say there isn't ANYTHING intelligent about racing a stocker,, :-) but heck, they've probably never done it either.
The response's (both here and in private) have certainly been thought provoking, decision is still pending.

I recommend the 396-350 combo, simply because.

The 327 and 350 would rank as the most beat-on combos in Stock Elim. Advantages: lots of parts, lots of experience/information,lots of competition. Disadvantages: too sorted out, will take too much effort to go really fast.

The 396-325 has also been beat on pretty hard. It will probably get HP this year.

The 396-350 will likely only cost 10hp next year and the camshaft difference is worth it. If you get tired of it, put a smaller cam in it and you have a 325 engine.

Personally, I would do the 302 or the 396-375, but that's because I like the activity of a stick car.
