Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
A story book ending would be all we could ask for. It’s Class day
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
With the luck of qualifying with the five FS/D cars I will have a bye into the class final. Yes!!!!
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
We won Class with Dumbo at the U S Nations it was a long journey but learned a great deal.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Congratulations!

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Great job guys. It's been really cool following the process on this car.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Well that was a short vacation. After looking at the performance of Victor’s 2023 402 COPO we know we are down at least 4 1/2 mph to the COPO. That tells me that I need to find 50 more horsepower just to be even. And so it goes!
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Y’all probably think I’m crazy but I hope to try a different converter this weekend.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I must be crazy, too. Because if I lived near by, I'd help!

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I must be lucky. Pulled the passenger seat to check my connection on all the wires under the seat and found none of them loose but the power wire on a relay was off. I’m not sure when it came off but it was off. I’ll spend the rest of the day checking stuff and changing oil and filter.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Had time this week to give Dumbo a bath and install the missing decals. Loaded the car and the golf cart in the trailer for testing. I didn’t make it I was to tired to go. This getting old is not for the meek.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Getting the Feather Lite ready to go testing. With front cabinets, golf cart, and Dumbo you have to be a contortionist to tie everything down. I did get a cheep oil less air compressor that the little Gen set could handle. Truck and trailer with a small ice chest a few waters a Coke or two and a sandwich or two. I will be race ready.
Getting the parts and pieces gathered for next year’s engine. Dear Santa, I have been good most of the year and the only thing I want for Christmas is a little time. So please bring me a .2 of a second reduction of my quickest time this year and I be will be very happy. We will leave milk and cookies and some of Kentucky’s finest to help keep your noise red. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Their are a lot of really smart people out there who are willing to help. Case in point. I was doing a really poor job in driving Dumbo. In fact we had yet to win a round of competition outside of Class and 97%of the losses were poor driver performance. I had driven the Cuda so long that I would make the 1/2 shift way to soon. Joel’s On Joy to the rescue, an automatic 1/2 shift preset by a RPM rpm chip. Problem solved. I can do my burnout like I want and make the run and only have to shift once. It worked very well this weekend.
I know, I know welcome to the 20th Century. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Congrats on your Doorslamers win, seeing you win class at Indy and taking Dumbo to the winners circle is testimony to all of your hard work.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I had to change fuel in the middle of the race due to a fuel leak. Shane Smith was kind enough to sell me some of his or I could not make third round. Today I have to remove the tank and purge the fuel system to make sure I can pass fuel check at St Louis. A little extra work but worth it. Run the valves and load up to travel on Thursday.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
You surely have the Challenger's suspension working nice. Have to get some tips from you.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Four wheel scales, Penske, Holley, Goodyear, video in slow motion. Almost forgot have the best racers you know help.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Stupid old man trick, putting it in high gear way to early and wasting a good light. Just poor concentration !
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Guess how everybody else knows all too well how you feel? ;)
That just makes ya appreciate it even more when it's done right  |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
It makes me feel so bad that I let the car down.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Had two really good runs today. I had good concentration.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Looking forward to this off season to spend some time on the dyno learning how to tune better. We need to close the gap between us and the new COPO 402 DI cars
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
The 402 is port injected.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Are you sure?
Do you still want to race the monster motor FS/D against my slow moving elephant ? |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Installed a different converter and was pleasantly surprised one day and disappointed in the next day performance. It’s trying to tell me something, I wish I was a smarter listener.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Next step is a change in transmission ratios. Baby steps now.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Starting to receive parts to modify for the valve train.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Santa’s bringing me a better lathe. I need to get a lot done quickly or Mr. Vic will just get smaller going down the track. If I’m not the lead dog the view never changes.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
The lathe I purchased is 1970 model and it needs a good cleaning. It’s a 17 X 60 Summit with very little ware. It does have a Buck 10 “ adjustable 6 jaw chuck. It’s a little low on head stock oil so we have some on order.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Cool! I just picked up an industrial milling machine. Wife asked, I said I needed it to build the stocker :)
Lathe is next though! Love the elephant build! Can't wait until I'm at the point I can start looking at incremental improvements to get the last out of it instead of figuring how to hit the index. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Back from the PRI Show with new information to be armed and dangerous. I can’t believe I drove 700 + miles to realize that I needed one of these. I have something similar but just not good enough for the task at hand. For me the show is about furthering my race education. There are always classes to help people in the quest for success in racing and or the racing business. Just like Uncle Al reminds people “It doesn’t cost a thing to pay attention”.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Attention is free-pay it!
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
More for the shop but will be use on the elephant a new set of vee blocks for inspections. Received my new parts and service manual for my 1970 Summit lathe.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Santa Clause brought the Vee blocks early. Other stuff is still on he way. Between being a good grandpa and going to my granddaughter basketball games, doctor’s appointments, and typical maintenance for transportation and home, Dumbo has had to take a backseat. Life sometimes gets in the way of racing
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I’m trying to finish a car with a full time 3yr old. Some of you may say I have a 3yr old what’s so difficult, but he is one of nine grandchildren along with five great grandchildren.
Sometimes I think I’m too old for this (kids, not the car LOL) |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Our granddaughters bring way more frequent smiles than my race car, but when the car does something good the smiles look the same. Got everything to take oil and turned a test piece. Finish was good and size was predictable. I still need to clean the taper attachment and make a part or two for it. Other than that “Santa Clause has been berry berry good to me”
Y’all have a very Merry Christmas! |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
The microscope I think will be a great addition for reusability of parts. It was real cool looking at used Sparkplugs at the base of the ceramic.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Spent the last few days in Pensacola Beach Fla. watching high school basketball, the granddaughter’s of course. Different skill levels top to bottom but everyone wants to win and everybody dives for the ball and hussels. It’s fun to watch.
