Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I had a question on an installation item and I called the help line and got very good help. The wait was worth it.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I have Bob Toy helping, doing a lot, on the wiring. When he is done we will have a blue print of all of the wires in the car. With the print it make it a little easier to troubleshoot. I ordered some parts in an attempt to make some jumper wires.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I did not realize it at the time but my old friend gave me a wonderful gift, a wad of old wiring harnesses. They have come in handy in learning to disassemble and harvest connectors. Thanks you Jeff and the rest of the Southland Dodge Racing Team!

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
It starts and runs and we will tune it later this week on the dyno. It was a little more nerve racking than I thought. Because if it didn’t run I would have known that I did something wrong. It started so quick it almost scared me, what a nice surprise.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
We me and Dumbo had a great day at Robin Lawrence’s Dyno Service. Robin ‘s problem solving skills were on full display all day with enough time to explain to me why and how. After a full day with Robin my head was way past full. Carbs are easier but fuel injectors are way better. Bottom line Robin’s Dyno Service is a great value for time and money spent.
Thanks Robin |

Did you get the t shirt?😁

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
They were out of my size, surprise! The one I chose: “I’m a Stock eliminator racer and spend a lot of money to go that slow”.
Cost of my trip 750 miles @ 10 mpg X $4.00 gal average 2 nights in motel 3 days food and drinks Two full days of dyno time And as Randy Payne would often say, “Can’t put a price on a good time!” My advice to anyone going to a dyno: take everything you might need. Most of the stuff you take you’ll never need but if you do you might have what it takes to make the next pull. Plugs, fuel, wires, connectors, first aid kit, tires and wheels, injectors, coils, a few nuts and bolts. On the road sometimes you see some interesting stuff. West Frankfort Il. has an good 1/8 mile track that has a good Saturday night program. The track can be seen from I 57. To get to the track a lot of racers have to cross a bridge going over I 57. Last night I observed what I think is a serious racer. As I approached the bridge on SB I 57 a tow truck was hooked to a truck pulling an enclosed trailer across the bridge heading to the track. Hope they won enough money to fix the truck. Got to go the turkey’s are out in the field strutting there stuff. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
It was great working with Larry getting his conversion to the Holley EFI sorted out.
The big mistake that I made was assuming since the start up program worked so well we would be able to complete Larry's list of items in short order. As in many cases I am a little too optimistic. I must have made the Mopar gods mad at some point. We were able work through a few small issues and hit the goals we had discussed many months ago. Larry was the perfect customer as the car was 100% ready to go. He also brought enough parts to work through anything that came up during the time on the rollers. I do think that we changed a sensor or 2 and a set of plugs and a larger set of injectors. While sorting the car out was the primary goal we spent a fair amount of time analyzing data and getting Larry familiar with the Holley software. It's my intention to have racers learn from what we do during our session rather than have someone do it for them." Robin |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
If you are over 40 and new to FI , I would try the snake oil that is advised on TV for memory improvement because my head got full real quick and then suffered from information overload.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Going to Bowling Green this weekend for a double combo race. Our goal is to shake the car down and hope to run under the index in FSS/F. We will see.
Y’all come and race it’s a great place! |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Congratulations, I think it will run the number!
LOL! Y'all know the starting line will be stellar as always. Let Dumbo fly! |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
And keep us posted.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I’ll try to get Patsy to post, I’m sure I will be checking stuff.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
We have trailer problems. Not going to make BG I think they had 40 SS/S.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Another weekend of disappointment we have had trailer problems, rain , and more rain. We are trying to find a place to test.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I found Dumbo sun visors. Three screws and done

A new lift cylinder fixed the trailer. It was kind of a trick to get 40” of clearance under the trailer to R and R the cylinder using the hydraulic cylinder and Jack-stands with a few crossties thrown in for good measure.
NMCA race this weekend in St Lout. It’s always a good time at the NMCA races. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
The trailer is loaded with Dumbo, chase car, and golf cart. Leaving to race in St Louis in the morning and we are more them ready to smell smoke. We are ready to see old friends and meet new ones. Twenty minutes to ten EDT and filling motor home with water.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Dumbo went A to B but was a little lazy of the line. He should get better. On the second hit he went .05 quicker at 330’. Progress.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I’m happy that the car runs well and goes straight. My next big challenge with the car is becoming computer savvy so I can attack the little things and try to run with the Big Boys. This old dog has to learn some new tricks.
Patsy says the best old dog trick I do is rolling over and playing dead. |

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Rescaling the car this morning and testing at Beacon race track later today. Going to try some different things. I’m going to raise the training wheels up a little and see what happens.
It rained. Now it’s off to Chicago for the race this weekend. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Added two 7/16-14 shoulder eyebolts to make tie down easier. Dumbo can be a real bear to tie down on a regular trailer because it has very little ground clearance. I hooked up Joel’s On Joy auto on two shift on the trans, I still need to test.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Auto One Two worked like a champ. I can’t say enough good things about Joel’s On Joy. I think he is partial to elephants.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Is this a valve body mod that automatically shifts 1-2 and you manually shift 3? I googled but can’t get much on this.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
1, 2 is automatic 2, 3 is manual. With the Hemi everything happens so fast and most times I would be late. This will be the first race using the auto 1/2 shift and as bad as I hate to admit it my reflexes are slowing down. The big question is going to be if I can remember to do all thing’s correctly before I stage the car.
After seeing the car on the lift the eye bolts hang down to far to be left on the car during competition. R and R won’t be bad and tie down was much easier. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Dumbo is better than the driver
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Dumbo picked up a little?
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Dumbo is a little slow in 60’ and it would be real easy for me to blame it on “Elephant Azz”, butt I won’t. The Holley system is working well and believe it or not I can download load a run now.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
We have improved on dialing the car. The data logs are easy to read and shows a few places that could use a little adjustment, I think. The ET slip will be the judge. Maintenance on the car before Norwalk.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Just ran the valves this afternoon and the worst one was out the thickness of a hair. Those T and D rockers stay put. Oil and filter change for the transmission tomorrow.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Once you get the fuel table optimized along with the suspension the car should print tickets. When the combination is optimized the car will be consistent.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Thanks Frank you make it sound so easy but we will get it. I promise.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
. Save every map change with a unique file name so you can go backwards.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I only have a few major stumbling blocks, I don’t know how to drive a computer and lack confidence in making changes to the tune. I’m so afraid of loosing what I have or screwing it up so bad it won’t run. But I will get better. I feel like I have some of the best people to help me if I have a problem.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Larry, Signman has given you excellent advise about saving everything in your racing computer.. Mine are saved by date, type of run IE P1 (practice run 1) and what track was the run was made.. It all comes easier the more you do it. I still have the FAST system on mine and probably will have to switch to the Holly system sooner or later and have to relearn it all over again but I do think my experience with the FAST system will help me a lot to pick up the new system.. I still review it every so often to keep it fresh in my mind.. For me it's use it or lose it... I try to use it before I lose it... Good luck and I am sure you will be comfortable with this before you know it!! Rooting for you guys at every race you attend....

Larry here is a video on file management
Basic file management methods are pretty important to not lose a good tune and be able to go back to it. Also keeping a note pad with changes will be helpful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkC_49_ohY0 |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Do I have a lot to learn and master. Master is used in the loosest terms. I think I needs lots of dyno time and a dyno mule.
Thank to all trying to help get into FI |
