Re: Best Oldsmobile Super Stock Of All Time?

Dick and Dennis, the wagon you are refering to belonged to al seager not al provost, i'm at work right now but i have a picture of it at home i will add tonight. i grew up in the "Go Shop" speed shop (al and dick's shop) and learned many of tricks from al seager and dick griffin. i think al seager passed away in the late 90's, dick griffin passed away in 2010 i think it was. al seager went to a white 98 stocker and dick griffin went to a 1978 two tone dark brown/tan 442 salon(the ugly one) that he drove from lansing to the gators and won class with it then drove it home. i bought that car a couple of years later and it still ran like 12.60 if i remember right. does anyone remember the covair dick griffin used to run ? i would like to see a picture of that again. i will post the pic tonight. thanks for reading, jim

Re: Best Oldsmobile Super Stock Of All Time?

The car Dennis has was mine. Dick never owned it and Al Provoast borrowed it to run at the 77 U.S. Nationals. I ordered it new from a local Olds dealer as a firethorn red and woodgrain 455 ci Vista Cruiser with the sun/moon roof deleted. I changed it to all black in 1980.
In 1976 I loaned it to Tom Carter who drove it to the U.S. Nationals and went to the Quarter finals in Stock before losing to Tom Reider. Then packed it up and drove home to Grand Rapids, Michigan. If I sound defensive I apologize but I've had people argue with me when I told them I was the original owner when asked.

Re: Best Oldsmobile Super Stock Of All Time?

I think you are right about Dick Fortman but I think those two Cooper cars are two different cars unless the 70 was converted to a 72. The one in front of the plane is a 70 w31 if Im not mistaken. The one on the grass is a 72. Of course it was common for Olds racers of this time to change bumpers, grilles, and headlight bezels to keep the Cutlass or 442 in the current year from 70 to 72. If thats the case it could be the same car. Dale Smith of Oldsmobile would send racers 72 grilles, headlight bezels, and taillight lens for the 71 cars. But you would have to change the core support on the front of 70 cars to convert them to 71 and 72, or at least to do so correctly. Several Olds of this time operated like this. The Jim Waibel Cutlass that later became Buddy Ingersolls, The 71 blue Remlinger convertible that was repainted red with 72 parts added, and that dark colored Al Seger Cutlass SX convertible posted on this thread was repainted white with 72 parts added. It gets better, when Seger was done with the white convertible he put a 350 in it and sold it. SX only had 455s. So that SX convertible was painted white with 72 cosmetics added, given and 350 and turned lose in the early 70s. A puzzling thing about the blue Remlinger convertible is that it has the wrong grilles. They may have switched them to the 71 Cutlass S grilles because they were lighter than the correct metal grilles for this Supreme. At first I thought they changed them to use the fiberglass hood but Ive seen ram air hood with Supreme grilles and a few 71 SXs probably left the factory as such. Ron Garey ran a 71 Supreme with the same plastic incorrect grilles also though. Im thinking it was a weight saver.

http://wildaboutcarsonline.com/membe...0427774318.jpg
These two cars are the same car. Dark color was repainted white with 72 parts added and later sold with an incorrect 350 engine. SXs were only made 70-71 and were all 455 powered. This car is ultra rare being an SX and then an SX convertible.
I read they bought it off an Oldsmobile dealer's wife. There was another dark colored SX convertible raced by Danny Lattimore but this is a different car.
http://wildaboutcarsonline.com/membe...1293918981.jpg
Yet another rare SX convertible drag racing. This is different than the Al Seger car. This car ran in the Maryland area.

http://wildaboutcarsonline.com/membe...0428381200.jpg

I was told these two Remlinger cars above were the same. If so they even corrected the bodyside molding and added the 72 chrome bottom rocker molding which is impressive. That wasnt the case with the Al Seger convertible above.
Both pairs of convertibles (Al Seger and Remlinger)seem to carry over the same rims respectively with the Al Seger car having motor wheel spyders and the Remlinger using the same keystones? Just to be clear here the Al Seger car is a different car than the Remlinger car and the Dodson and Lattimore is a different car from the other two.

Cool photos. Someone told me that the red '72 Olds convertible pictured is the same car that Jerry Dover's son, Jerry, Jr. later drove. I wonder what happened to that car?

Re: Best Oldsmobile Super Stock Of All Time?

Speaking of Jerry Dover, His brown 70 hardtop ended up with a racer in Bowling Green Kentucky named Bill Hudson for several years until Mr. Hudson's death. It was sold at an estate auction for either $6500 or $8500. Despite the 442 emblems this car had a Cutlass vin which may explain why it has a Cutlass rear bumper without the exhaust notches.

i own the red olds convert that jim wheeler drove for remlinger olds.that the late jerry dover drove. and the blue 71 and red 72 were two different cars.same wheels were on both cars. and yes jerry jr drove it to. in 2007 jr bought it from the family that wheeler sold it to in1974 from houma. the car wen't to storage in 1979 with no transmission or driveshaft and stayed there till 2007 when jerry jr bought it.we somewhat restored it with and old stock engine that sr had in a crate from olds. i bought it from jr in 2010 and sits in my shop next to my black 71 W30 that i partley won the 1988 world championship with.the last half of 1988 i raced the 88 cutalss with.

Re: Best Oldsmobile Super Stock Of All Time?

Ok. Well that settles that. Somebody body in the Olds racing fraternity from back then told me the blue and red convertible were the same. I thought they sure took alot of time to put 72 side molding on the car if they did. The bodyside molding always put doubt in my mind. I read the blue car was a 320 horse 455. To your knowledge did Remlinger run a 455 in the red car? Glad the car survived. Thanks.
