To hi-hack it a little farther, "Tony" was Tony Machado who, as far as i know, never drove the car at all. Harvey drove it until his health failed and later it was driven a few times by Tony's nephew. The car ran with either a 375 horsepower or 350 horsepower combination and scored multiple class wins in SS/D as well as SS/G over the years.

Thats not a Shelby, its a Boss 302 car that was being raced as a 428 CJ Stocker. Lloyd and DG bought the car and later sold it to Mike Wenke. I have some pics that I will try and post of Lloyd and DG from the 80's if I can figure out how to post them.

Are you sure about that? I know the picture is a little fuzzy, but it definitely looks like a '69 Shelby to me. The stripe comes all the way to the front of the fender, the scoop behind the door, the NACA ducts on the hood.

Anyway, it really doesn't matter. Let's get back to hearing more stories about Lloyd and D.G. and bring on those pics!!:)

Re: Anybody have any history on these guys?

OK, I wasn't going to tell this one, but,,,,
It was the Topeka National back in the mid 90's.
I went to teardown to help a fellow racer, so I wasn't around during the time that everyone in our pit area had begun to "pop a top". When I did get back there just about everyone was wasted, I mean there were people just laying around their trailers, Lloyd was making Margarita's. He had the trunk open on John Cooper's Fairlane with his blender in there and a generator running the darned thing. Grinning from ear to ear and just making the hell out of those drinks, he looked at me and said "Jeeeum, its just unbelievable keeeeud, we have already went through toooowo whole bags of iiiiiice." You would just have to have experienced being around Lloyd to appreciate the humor in his voice and mannerisms, but all of you on here that know him like I do can just imagine.......
That old guy had more fun at the races than just about anybody I ever met.
"DeeGee!,,,,did you see that???????

It's great to hear everyone talk and reminece about Lloyd. I am one of the many who have benifitted greatly from Lloyds knowledge. Lloyd has been my mentor and friend! When Lloyd and D.G. first opened the new shop 10 or so years ago I had the privilige of helping move equipment. If anyone knows Lloyd he sat in his wheelchair and coordinated the whole operation like dance. At the end of the day I was on my hands and knees cleaning the floor! From then on I would leave my business on friday evening and go to Bartlesville and work for or with Lloyd till Sunday. I gained all of my engine machining skills from Lloyd. Lloyd had learned a tremendous amount of Knowledge from people like Les Ritchie and people like that. He was happy to pass on his knowledge to anyone Who would listen, and i listened for hours as like many he was a hero of mine. I have great memories of bracket racing with him at Ark City, Ks. Lloyd used to scare the hell out of me when i first saw them in about '82. Lloyd always wore the dark sunglasses and would never crack a smile,he was so serious. A 16 year old kid got schooled by the man. It sure is good to hear everyone elses stories. Big Ed Dobson stk 4773

Re: Anybody have any history on these guys?

I can not pass up this chance to share my adventures with Lloyd. I grew up going to the races and since my dad raced a CJ mustang I always watched who drove one in stk or ss. Being that Lloyd raced a CJ mustang I always looked up to him as a hero. It was the 1985 Mile High nats and my dream came true. I was the tender age of 14 and me and uncle RJ (Sledge) headed to the race by ourselves. Sat night we went to dinner with Lloyd DG and a host of other racers and I am thinking look who I am having dinner with!!! Ever since that day Lloyd has always been a mentor and friend to me. I started to drive and then building engines he was always someone I could call and bend his ear for his wealth of knowledge in both areas. Lloyd was always eager to help. The best piece of advice he ever give me was, I was having problems with some engine issues and I was at a race sitting in his trailer telling him all about it and in his Lloyd way told me- keeeud theeree is three things you have to remember when you are building a race motor DETAILS-DETAILS-DETAILS!!!! till this day I have never forgot that. Then there is his famous Margarita's!!! I first got a taste at the Dallas nat event in 93. Then I was one of the casualties at the 95 Topeka nat that was laying in his trailer after who knows how many pitchers!!!! Lloyd kept saying you want another one keeeud? One thing we had in common was him and my mom both had diabetes. So every time I saw him I was always checking on him to make sure his blood sugar was ok. Of course his answer was always yes keeeud I am OK. In my opinon Lloyd and DG were true pioneers of Ford stk and ss racing and racing period and I want to say thanks for all the help, friendship and being a mentor during my career as a racer and a machinist!!! Most of all thanks for taking time to talk to a 14 yr old kid!! It is great to here all of the stories I know he will be proud! Thanks

Steven,

Best I remember about that "Topeka Casualty" was that you had a few other beverages along with the "Killer-Rita's" too! I think that was the same night Uncle Mike fell out too......

Alright guys and gals, I have an idea. I was thinking of buying this and seeing if I could find someone to paint it to match Lloyd and D.G.'s car. I would then send it to Lloyd, maybe give him a smile and remind him of the good ol' days. Good idea or bad? Anybody good @ painting models?

I remember that seeing that car at Tulsa International Raceway years ago. I never could remember who it belonged to. That really brings back lots of memories. Seeing it again also makes me think of Ed Wrights 65 Chevelle and James Lee's 55, the first real NHRA cars I ever saw in real life. Those sure were the good old days for me. Thanks for posting that picture.

You're probably right Daniel. But I'm not any good at that either, lol. I'm trying to get the car bought off of Ebay as we speak. If anyone can or knows someone that can paint something like this, please let me know. Daniel, we'll probably need more photos for this mission. You better get busy. :)
