I'm thinking when we first started running IHRA your lane choice was whoever was quicker in qualifying. 1999'ish. Only lasted a couple years, then they changed it to the way NHRA does it. Or am I dreaming this.?

I go back over 50 years, and coin toss was always used. Just because some people can spend a lot of money, doesn't mean they should get lane chose.

Our local NHRA track goes by a better reaction time in the previous round.
Who ever had a better reaction in the prior round gets the lane choice.

When Tom Rix raced the '70 Buick in Top Stock we discovered IHRA used qualifying to award lane choice when at an IHRA National Event our competitor ran way slower then we did the previous round yet had lane choice. I believe it was changed later but I'm not positive.
I don't recall how it was at the Division 5 (?) races, Bill did a pretty good job with the starting line so with the slower SS '72 GS it wasn't a huge deal after we sorted out the car. Anatol may recall. In any case great times to race.

In IHRA Top Stock the higher qualifier had lane choice in round one. The rest of the race the quicker car had lane choice . I think if it was a tie in ET the fastest MPH had lane choice.
We did not have lane choice many times or win a lot of rounds but for us, Jerry and myself, it was some of the best racing we ever did.

I remember waay back in IHRA, the guy at the head of staging had a deck of cards, pulled one card for each staging lane, the higher card had lane choice.

As it turns out this update on the entire staging lane process was brought up and discussed at length during our last SRAC "Super class" meeting a couple of weeks ago. The conversation was initiated from recent events in multiple divisions. The emphasis from the SRAC was to provide more clarity of the "race procedures" rules around staging lanes, etc., (which do apparently exist) but few of the racers actually know of the details of them (and NHRA had opted not to wholesale publish them). The message was that if you want us to adhere to them, and follow them, then they should be shared.

Hats off to NHRA in this case for listening that they had an issue and addressing it.

Of course the specific lane choice items being discussed here for S/SS was not discussed in our "super class" meeting but apparently it was flushed out when the other items were communicated. There's still gaps in the procedure for the Supers, but it's a whole lot clearer than it was.

I don't recall when Larry, they did change it sometime not long afterwards.
