Re: My 67 El Camino
Having my own business with one full time employee, being partner in another business, and two grandkids at home doesn't leave much time for cars.Having put in a whopping 5 hours over the winter on my El Camino, I made a deal for Josh Stewart of Stewart Auto Fab (right across the parking lot) to just scuff and shoot it. I'd really like to have it on the track this year - my goal is to run at the Div 3 meet at Stanton. I'll concentrate on being legal to start - going fast will have to come later.

Off to the Blaster! We loaded the El Camino on the trailer today, then I took it to Multi-Blast in Montrose to have the roof and the other bad spots media blasted and primed.

It's WHITE! As in snow blindness white.

Re: My 67 El Camino
I finally found some money to spend on my El Camino. I bought the sheet metal hump to cover the shifter and a set of Lakewood lift bars. I'm going to swap the power steering box for a manual box a friend gave me before I put the motor in. I'm going to start out with a stone stock 68 230 with @ 80,000 miles just to get the car up and running.

I dig the refridgerator white. Seems everyone goes for "screaming colors", I prefer plain and simple. I like your approach as well. Put a simple drivetrain together to sort the car out. Gives you the opportunity to relearn the ropes. To me there's a good lesson here that younger racers often miss. Build the car first, learn what it does. Then start to concentrate on the drivetrain. Good luck with this build. Hope to see it at the track someday. |

Finally did some more work on my El Camino. We took the power steering box off and put on a manual one that a friend gave me. I figured it was easier to change out before I put the motor in.

I decided I was going to work on the El Camino this weekend. I have had a 68 230 out of a Nova and thought I would put it in so I can get to the track before it closes for the winter. I put on a Hays 30 lb. flywheel, a new Ram clutch and a stock bellhousing. Billy Nees has loaned me a Doug Nash 4 speed, but I decided to put the motor in without the trans for now. My next door neighbor has a lift and a transmission jack so we will put the trans in from underneath.

It was a frustrating weekend for me - I got the trans in to find the bolt holes in the mount miss the slots in the crossmember. Then when I tried the headers they hit the motor mount. I have 4 different sets of headers, and they ALL hit! I'm going to make my own mounts to move everything back about 5/8" and that will clear the headers.

Don't give up on this one...I would love to see it go down the track. I sure do miss my '65.
