This car, a '57 T-Bird was running C/SA and I watched a time trial wherein he went 13-flat (don't remember the mph) by simply stomping the accelerator... no power-brake/stall-start at all. Zero wheelspin.
The car was 10 years old at the time... Parham and Payne were there, also, with their 300 HP '57 4-door hardtop McCullough blown Ford, too. |

The T-Bird belonged to Dave Edmunds from Ohio. Here's another picture of it from 68 racing Ramon Lowe.

Dual quads were rated at 270 hp std cam and 285 with the E-2 cam which was used later in the Blower cars as I rememer the E-2 cam was also a Pontiac option in 57 or 58 and the E2 was a Isky grind that several of the Auto companys used

Re: What class does this supercharged / stick Thunderbird fall in?
If I remember right, the '57 Tri Power Pontiacs had a dealer-installed option of a solid lifter cam. It may have been an Isky e-2 or e-3.... I dunno. Maybe someone else will remember that. I think this was in the pre-McKellar days...
One such vehicle, owned by Tulsa's John Zink won the top stock class at the '57 NHRA Nationals in Oklahoma City, that year. I think he ran 96 MPH, on street tires, with mufflers, and with the air cleaner on. "Stock" meant STOCK, in those days. :) |

Thanks, Terry.
I HOPE NHRA brings these Pontiacs back along with the Chevies, whewn they do this. Those, along with the blown Ford and Studes, would sure make for some interesting racing!!! |
Re: What class does this supercharged / stick Thunderbird fall in?
Tony, There are several on here that have the old "Red Books", but alas no engine spec's book. I was told (I think by Cloy F.) that they still had the old specs for all, but that was years ago.

That brings to mind one positive thing NHRA has done - you used to have to buy the classification guide! Now you can look it up on the internet for free. Better keep our mouth shut.
Also, look at that 57 T-Bird. The class numbers are on the door and the contingency stickers are on the window! |
