Speaking from experience, he should be glad that the boundary line was there in lieu of the grass/guard rail/wall, which is the way it used to be in previous years. Stew, as I'm sure you know, the event stems from the races that Fred Reich (RIP) put together and used to be held at the now closed 75-80 Dragway, and I think everyone just wants to race in a low pressure environment at a decent facility to give closure to a long season. It's a bummer for anyone to get DQed for any reason, just don't let it keep you from coming back next season.

Here are a few rules, that would cover this incident.

From the IHRA Rulebook, page 147. "Touching strip outer marker line or leaving the strip surface during race distance unintentionally"

From the NHRA Rulebook. page 46. "Should a driver...cross the lane boundary line. In determining lane boundary crossing violations, it is considered a disqualification when any portion of a tire completely crosses the painted line surface. In situations where multiple boundary lines are utalized, the line directly adajacent to the competitors racing lane will be used for reference".

From Mason-Dixon Dragway's website. "While on a pass, a driver cannot allow his or her vehicle to cross either the center or outer lines. If the driver crosses a line during qualifying, his or her time will not count. If he or she does this during elimination's, the car is disqualified. This is to keep drivers from staying on the power too long when the car has assumed a dangerous posture on the track, or "gotten out of shape."

I have never paid much attention at any track to see if there was an "out of bounds" marker line towards the wall.

Chris, I never had much either, because so few tracks have a double "outer" boundary. I know Englishtown does, I think Memphis and maybe a very few other ones. Had this incident taken place at a National or Divisional race at E-town, the same ruling would have been made.

Hey Mike, remember a few years ago when i run Mohar 1st round and ended up with one rear tire off in the grass and got dqed. Hey, i would have been happier/felt safier with the line atleast then i would have known where i was on the track. The way it was before i just drove off the one side and right back on the track. How would the guy who owned the car felt if he would have gone off in the grass then wrecked the car? The way the track is set up now is MUCH nicer than the way it was back a few years ago.
