Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I had to go to a transmission shop to get some gaskets and a few small stock parts. If you run a trans that has not been made for a while, I would suggest getting one or two cores just for parts.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Good news. We got new stronger parts from ProTrans, Joel’s on Joy installed and tested. Installed trans in car and it ran the same. We went four rounds at the local track in foot brake. I forgot about the stripe taker on the front of my competition.
Change oil, adjust valves, and head to Belle Rose later this month. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Dumbo liked the Louisiana air, best run was the 9.125 @ 145.xx. It’s been a long journey but I think I’m close to done.

You never get done but I like it’s performance

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Hi Larry-nice to see solid progress! Was the 9:12/145 at FS/D weight?

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Hey Larry or Chris,
What did Dumbo weigh (including Larry) on that 145mph pass? Trying to refer to my original notes with Larry about testing stuff.;) Good job down there in the swamps for sure. Thanks in advance, HB2:) Dissident |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Minimum weight for FS/D with driver is 3395#. After the run the car scaled 3415# and that is within 5# of what it weighs on my scales.
HB2 as always thanks for helping me think in the correct direction! |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Congratulations on your performance, Larry.
You know me ..I always appreciate seeing a hands on guy in action. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I almost have the car race ready. By race ready for me is how easy and fast can we service the car and change components to make the next round. This winter’s project is, as always weight reduction. Goal this year 15 to 20 pounds for the car and 20 pounds for the driver.
Thanks Mark |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Whats your plans for next year Larry ?

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
After my hand is fixed and healed, adding some data loggers, dyno time, testing, win the championship. Pretty much the same as last year and every year, with the exception of the surgery and the extra logging.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I have planed to do this while my hand is on the mend from surgery. In a couple of months my left hand should be a whole lot better. But while I'm healing I will try to thank everyone that has contributed to the success of Dumbo.
Jeff Teuton, Dale Aldo, Gary Jennings, Goodyear, Kevin Helms, John Morris, Eric Cunningham, Dale Matthews, Zack Ross, Wallace Stanford, Billy Godbold, David Page, Cooter Hidalgo, Randy Eakins, Matt Maxwell, Shawn at Southland performance, Sid Bonnecarrere, Jeff Taylor, Geoff Turk, Tony at BES, Harrold Bettis, Jimmy Ronzello, Dennis Breeden, Keith Lynch, Mike Fuller, Joel from Joel’s on Joy, Mike Wagnor, Mike from MPR, Kile Carothers, Calven Elston, Jerry Wittig, Jeff McAdoo, Rock Hass, Jerry Bennet, Brad Van Lant, Wiring Wizard BobToy, Doug Duell, Crag Madox, Charle at ATI, Brad Rounds at T&E, Darren at Advance Motion, John Richardson, Frank at Tommy’s, Jimmy Bridges, George Widuch, John at Classic Instruments, Jason at Mark Williams, the Smith family at Pro Trans, Wesley at NHRA, Keith at Total Seal. John Donato. To all the great folks that have helped and yet to be named, please forgive me I’m doing this from memory. At my age I’m lucky to remember how to get to town and back. As anyone can see I have some really special people to listen to and take their advice. An a extra special thanks to all the folks at IHM Used Parts for your continued support. Of course with me every step of the way is my family, son Chris, and my oh so tolerant wife of 50 plus years Patsy. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
My hand is on the mend and Race Pack parts are arriving.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
UK basketball has decided to make political statements which I think has no place in the college game. That will free up two to four more hours a week to work on the car.
My hand is coming along nicely, now it’s back to work. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Dr. said its ok to go back to work. I've been out of service for seven weeks, man do I have some catching up to do. To my surprise both hands have lost strength and are tender.
But Patsy and I received our first of two vaccination yesterday. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
All nine O2 sensors fit in the pipes and on the car. I did have to remove one tube to install the O2 and then reinstall the tube. Once again it shows how good Calven Elston is at his craft.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Well today is the first day I have felt good enough to get something done. I had good and bad news when I pulled the pipes off, most of the exhaust ports looked real good and dry, then pulled #8 and it was black and oily. So it will be off with its head to see what might be slowing it down. Now I have visions of the cylinder being fixed and the car going faster. Man I love this game!
I did bump my hand a few times and it reminded me how tender it was, but its getting better. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I'm trying to get a second engine built for a backup. So today and I mean a long today I spent doing inventory. I was surprised how much of the basic building blocks I had on hand. I still lack a few major parts but not as bad as I thought. I've saved up for a few things. Patsy just called and said supper is ready.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
How's #8s health?
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I should know more today after I leak check it. What I did see with the large runners and the injectors straight above them was the engine makes a lot of condensation. Water collected in the low spots in the head. Valve adjustments stay put, I had all valves within.001 of target.
Time for hand therapy, got to go. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
The leak test showed all valves leaking in the 13 to15% range. I’m wondering if the seats in the heads moved or every valve in it is bent from the trans letting go on the 1-2 shift at Indy points race. Why are learning curves so expensive?
On the positive side the valve lift is a little short and a new cam with a tick more lobe lift will get us to within .005” of maximum lift. It may help power. Progress on my hand is good now, after only 15 minutes of therapy I can put it flat on a table or make a fist. I can use it for a few things around the shop. |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
We were able to secure a major building block for the future of understanding on learning how to make power. We have three more weeks of racing then we will be home and get Dumbo to the paint shop to fix a fender that got rubbed on in the trailer.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Hows Dumbo doing ?
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Going to paint shop tomorrow, without engine and trans.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Getting Dumbo back this week from paint shop. New trans has arrived. Withdrew from Atlanta and don’t think we will be at Charlotte. Trying to get ready for Indy.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
Got Dumbo home Friday. Started on my diet to get the car to min weight. I lost 9# in four days, only 40 more to go before the Top Stock in Pa. It will also get Dumbo to the minimum weight in FS/D for Indy.
Got to go I here a piece of celery calling........ |
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
What was wrong with the trans ?
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
From the back of the pump to the front of the sprag it was junk. It exploded real bad, but Joel’s on Joy fixed it in time to go racing with it at the end of the year.
|
Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant
I had to do maintenance on motorhome, trailer, and pink car. All that racing adds up. Installed a TPMS on truck and trailer. After seeing the capabilities of the system I’m mad at my self for procrastinating so long in installing one. Thanks John Stock, Rusty Cook, and Bill Bagley for opening my eyes.
Back to work on Dumbo |
