Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant

I have to fix engine before I go anywhere. I'm so tired of all this crap that is poorly made at a high cost. A loose cam basket on the cam gear what a pos. Thank goodness the FAST system would not allow it to restart after the run. The cam signal was lost.

Larry I feel your pain, after 38 years running the same combination, refresh two engines and can't seem get more than 2 passes with out an issue. One had issues on the dyno and the other one just made it a pass and a half. Not sure weather to go fishing or gardening .

A weed is a plant that has mastered every survival skill except for learning how to grow in rows.

How is Dumbo s recovery ?

Larry Hill 06-06-2020 07:15 AM

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant

As the guy in NETWORK said "I'm made as hell and not going to take it any more! "
At best that is how I remember the quote.

I purchased a good idea part that is not in tolerance, poorly assembled, and supplied with the cheapest materials that fail in minutes.

Beware of a Rolon brand chain.

On a positive side I need to thank; Brad, Cooter, David, Jeff, Jimmy, Mike and Randy for some good honest help and direction. Thanks again.

Dumbo started after a little work and a few parts.

Next outing will be the Bowling Green Saturday and Sunday combo races this weekend. Two races for one tow and it's Bowling Green, what's not to like!

Automatic 1-2 shift worked well, I should have hooked it up earlier. Road test OK, but I need to bleed the brakes one more time. Stopping at 140 something makes you want to have "Top Shelf" brakes.

Add a chute! Only 10mph away from being required anyway. A lot of 150+ cars are probably lighter than Dumbo.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant

Bowling Green was a disappointment and successful all in one trip. We qualified well but lost in forth round do to tire spin. It really makes me appreciate what Kevin Helms did in Jeff's red car. We will get there, maybe not a national championship, but we will get A to B. I'm hoping sooner than later.

We passed our first NHRA tech inspection. It's always good to have someone different looking at your car.

Still working on car to it get better. Fixing starter, changing transmission ratios, thanks Joel. Changing oil and filter in engine and trans. Suspension work. It's the little things!

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant

Got my new Classic Instruments low temperature gauges installed today for Transmission and Oil temperature. Range of 40* to 220*. After installation turned them on and all three gauges read the same temp 87*. Added water to engine temp dropped to 63* and started to head to ambient. Real good stuff from John McCleod and the team at Classic Instruments.

It's American Made!!!

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant

Hey Larry on your low temp gauges are they just electric or are you just tapping into the can-bus system on the fuel injection?

Larry Hill 07-16-2020 07:01 AM

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant

The Classic gauges are stand alone and supply the information to the internal data recorder. Small, compact, light and easy to install, its a real top shelf product.

And Dumbo is the not so pretty Class winner at the Sports. A BIG tip of the hat to all of you that have helped during the past three years. I could not have done it without your help. Thank you !

Me thinks that Dumbo after tasting the reality of competition is hard at work with his trainer, the master of performance Larry Hill.
Sush! I can hear them in the garage as I speak.

What did you break in the transmission?

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant

Not sure input and output shafts very hard to turn, my guess planetarys.

Now working on pink car for plan B

Larry, your pink car is awesome, a true muscle car gem, IMHO and I am a diehard GM racer. That being said, do you still have the low qualifier 1/2 ton pick up truck ?

Yes, and it's for sale.

I should be back to Dumbo today. Finding a drive train vibration should be fun. TIR the drive shaft, yoke movement, flexplate check, and the rest.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant

All I have to do on this thread is thank everyone that helped. That is going to take a while and being the age I am I will forget or not mention some one who has helped. After three years of work I forgot some stuff, please do not be offended.

This weekend we were able to meet our performance goals on an eighth mile.

Thanks to all!

pmrphil 09-20-2020 02:14 PM

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant

What was the source of the vibration?

Larry Hill 09-20-2020 03:56 PM

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant

It could have been several things. I changed the drive shaft position and decreased TIR by .007, installed new tail shaft bushing, installed new bushing in front drum, and changed converters. I'm not sure what it was but it's gone. The converter in the car now is quicker the the one that was in it so the chances of that converter going back in the car are slim.
The good thing is the vibration is ok.

Re: Dumbo The Flying Elephant

The trans we destroyed in Dumbo is fixed and on the way back home.
All parts in trans were junk, rear ring gear, rear planet, rear sun gear, sun shell, front sun shell, front sun gear, front planet gear, front ring, all bearings, forward drum, direct drum, bands, clutches and steels, rollers, gasket, seals and filter.

Hp is good to have but has a cost.

We are looking forward to going to Belle Rose in November to race it at the open. Jeff and I have a small wager on this race to add a little excitement.
Hope to see a lot of friends at this race so y'all come on down
