Well, my premonition was correct...it took us from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm today to get everything lined up and in it's proper place. Overall I'm pretty satisfied with the panels gaps...so happy to have this part behind me finally. Now I can move along with final sanding and painting.

Alright...that's about enough. Put four good coats on it Tuesday morning and I'm tired of looking at it. Time to get this back together and get a motor in it...I'm itching to get back to the track. Think four days is enough time to begin wet sanding and buffing this acrylic urethane?

Sanding and buffing......my least favorite part of refinishing! Shoot for shine and take some dirt nibs out! 4 days should be plenty, make it sparkle. How is the engine coming?

Yes, I am already arm weary just thinking about it. Have not made much progress lately on the engine with nearly all my waking hours devoted to this paint.

Re: '67 Camaro E/SA redo

Went out yesterday and began wet sanding the hood. Started with 1000 grit and finished with 1500...went pretty well I think. I tried a test section on the hood with the rotory buffer and it went ok, but I'm just not comfortable using it and decided to leave that part to a pro.

http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps60fee189.jpg

http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps73a792ac.jpg

While I was finishing up the hood my partner came in and asked if he could give the buffer a go...told him how I felt about it but to give it a try if he felt ok with it. I moved to the rear of the car and continued to wet sand while he did his thing on the hood. Within a few minutes I heard some moaning up front and knew it was going to be some bad news...sure enough he had burnt up the paint on one side of the hood lol. Now he is mortified and won't even touch the car lol. I assured him I could fix it...when I finish wet sanding I will mask everything off and re-paint the hood in place. Think I will pick up a DA polisher which will be much safer to use in the end.

This has proven to be an exercise from hell lol...I'm closing in on it tho. There are many points I don't like about the job I have done so far, but I'm weary of looking at it so it ends this weekend one way or another. Pieces and parts are going back on the car Sunday...I'll correct my mistakes over the winter months ahead.

Btw, the Porter DA polisher was well worth the money. Anyone can use one of these without worrying about harming the finish...even my partner hehe. I'm even using it with some 3M 1000 grit wet/dry discs to speed the color sanding process. Oh, and the black tail is back as promised. :)

Got most of it done today...all I like is putting the interior door panels back on and the rear bumper. Bumper bolts were missing until I spotted them in a corner when I arrived back home this evening.

Still working on the Stocker motor so we dropped a 327 bullet in the bay to test. If it pans out the 327 is what it will be sporting at next year's Hot Rod Reunion at Bowling Green next spring. Waiting on a carb fuel line to fire the engine and check for leaks.

Just curious, Rich,,, what heads are on your 327 "test bullet"? They look from the outside like 186 or 492 castings, but my eyes aren't what they used to be.

Danny - I helped assemble that engine about seven years ago for a hot street '66 Chevy II, but a lot of the details escape me. I know they are the big valve and probably a 492 casting. I remember the pistons were short and light with narrow rings...only about 100 miles on the engine to date. The only change we made was to install a solid lifter 302 Stocker camshaft which replaced a factory 302 cam along with a single plane intake manifold.

Looks good Rich, it will really look outstanding when you get it all together.

You have put a lot of work into your Camaro this year and I am a little jealous of the amount of work that you have been able to accomplish.

Good luck next spring at Bowling Green.

Sounds like a pretty good combo,,,, it would be a killer stick motor,, should still run great in your "reborn" Camaro,,, have fun with it.

Yeah, it was in a stick car to begin with. Got it running now, but the new carb will need some tuning to cure an off idle stumble. Plan to take it to the track this weekend.

Great job!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've meant to comment sooner, but I got delayed. Back in the late '60's there was a '67 Z-28 that ran at E.S.T.A. Safety Park in Cicero N.Y. that was painted the same color. It was owned by Nate Galey, and he ran an Atlantic Gas Station in Fayetteville, NY. He named the car "Gold Rush". It ran really well back then. I have a pciture of the car launching and it I can find it, I'll post it. Good luck this weekend Sir.

Re: '67 Camaro E/SA redo

Thanks fellas...I picked that color because there were only 2% of those cars painted Sierra Fawn from GM in 1967. You probably can't tell in the pictures, but the finish is kind of splotchy in places due to the build-up of the metallic particles in random passes. I'm sure it is due to my lack of experience in spray gun control and never having sprayed a metallic paint before. I really hope to be able to re-do at least the sides of the car at some point in time.

Well,, since it IS a class car,,I'd just go ahead and buff the sides out once more, then put your decals back on, tastefully of course, and go racing. The contingency stickers will distract the eye from any "splotchy places" you're referring to. I think it looks great, Rich, but if you're going to eventually run decals on the car, don't beat yourself up over it,, go out and enjoy it. My 2 cents.

Re: '67 Camaro E/SA redo

Just got home from the track this evening from the car's first outing since the teardown and new motor install. It was a tuning exercise from hell with the new QuickFuel carb and intake...and it is far from over lol. Long story short is the motor only ran a best of 7.43 with 60' times around 1.55.

Now the good news...I managed to win the E.T. bracket race with this junk lol. It was the same scenario as our last final at US43 shortly before the teardown...somehow I managed to pull a horseshoe out of my butt cheeks again. Seems the worse our junk runs the more intense I become on the starting line. I wasnt beat on the tree in any round and every single round was won on the starting line. My partner was so happy I think he completely forgot what a dog of a motor he had haha.

Just a theory on my part atm, but I believe that Team G intake might just be too much for this motor's heads and camshaft. I'm thinking if I bolt the Stocker's manifold and our good Q-jet on this 327 it would really wake it up...may test this theory out Oct. 11 at a 3K no box race. At any rate it felt great being back at the track again finally.

Hey Rich, I finally had the chance to check my photo "archives" and found 2 pictures of the "Gold-Rush" Camaro I mentioned in an earlier post. In the effort to convert them from .pdf to .jpeg format they lost the color, but I will assure you that it's the same color that you used to re-paint your Camaro. In the Oct.'69 picture there is a 1960 Impala that my Dad & I raced back in the day. Jr. Stock Eliminator back then as k/sa. Loved that ole' car. Was undefeated in class competition 3 years straight. Thanks for bringing back good memories. I'm going to work on the picture format when I have a minute and if I can get them back to color, I'll re-post.
Take care Sir.

Rich, what happened to all four sides and the roof of your trailer? Did someone steal them while you were at the gas station? Didn't think they allowed just "trailer frames" to tow stockers anymore. Oh, and they got your diesel pusher motor home too. How you gonna run 1.25 under with a low buck tow rig?

Let's just say I have figured out what a "real" Stocker is made of...it isnt the money. I intend to do everything strictly by the rules and it will not approach those performance levels...of this I am certain. When it ceases being fun being outrun more than a half second in heads up races I'll just go bracket racing...I really enjoy a starting line battle more than anything anyway. Speaking my mind on this subject will probably not go over well here, but it is what it is. The new motor build will receive all the attention I can muster and it will be completely legit. ;)

Rich, Love the truck/ trailer combo. Back in my day, you were living high on the hog so to speak if you had a trailer. I'd say 90% of the stock and S/S racers in C.N.Y. flat towed and tow hubs were the latest craze. My dad and I had to disconnect the drive shaft to tow it to and from the strip.
And being a 2 pc. unit required us to wire it up to the floor board instead of removing it. Not too bad unless you hit a bumpy road.
Keep up the good effort Sir.

Right there with you, Rich... i have figured that out, too, but had already done that, before i even started my project...hehe... I will make a couple changes to my car( cam/valvetrain and maybe 350 trans) and see what it'll do , by next years' end, but i dont see ever having a 3k set of heads, or 1400$ ring package. I have done what i set out to do, which was to build what i call a 'legal stocker'... a fairly low budget deal, home built, and no real trick parts. Not even a dyno pull...hehe... My intent was to outrun the best E/stockers , from the mid late '80s, with similar parts. I have pretty much done that... Other than the cam, roller rockers and ignition, my car is equivalent to a 25-30yr old stocker...oh, and the fuel cell... If indexes woulda never been messed with , I'd be .51 under! Also, i miss my open trailer, but like not having to unload at 2a.m. in the morning...hehe

HandOverFist 10-05-2014 11:04 PM

Re: '67 Camaro E/SA redo

That's pretty much it Brent. I'll build it just as tight/right that I can...the rest of the car is already pretty much spot on. We have a routine where if we return home late I just back up to the shop door, unstrap the car and let it roll off the trailer into the bay...gets quicker every time. :)
