David Rampy – 4Th Comp Championship
David Rampy wins his fourth NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series world championship, with a total of 591 points. Davin Rampy, from Piedmont, Ala., took the title when competitors that still had a shot did not make the trip to the Auto Club NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.
David started the year with two final rounds, a national event win in Belle Rose, La., at the JEGS Cajun SPORTSnationals and a runner up at the South Georgia Motorsports Park divisional. He had divisional wins at Atlanta Dragway and Bristol Dragway, and won at the Summit Racing Motorsports Park national event in July.
The championship is David’s second in Comp, the other one was won back in 1990. He also has a Super Gas Championship from 1989 and one in Super Comp in 1995. David has seven Lucas Oil Series Divisional Championships, and has 86 NHRA national event wins, making him third on the all-time win list in the Lucas Oil Racing Series.
I am the owner of the 1990 comp 215 in. RED, Patterson Brothers powered super gas rail that NHRA driver David Rampy drove? in 1990 or 1991. I have the background histoy of the car when it went back to the Patterson Brothers and on to this date if i can find it. The car is perfect. My son ran it 96-98 outlaw Pro class. It has my built SMC 427 and Dendenber PG. The car sit for over 6 years with monthly crankings until i bought it from a fellow that bought it from a fellow that passed with cancer and never raced it. The man i purchased it from is from Gray,Ga. and i live in same Co. 4 miles from him, his last name was Jenning’s. It also has the original trailer. The car is deadly in outlaw Pro class racing and my son cut 3 perfect lights to win it’s last race and 7500.00 in 1998. I still have the complete and rebuilt super gas engine & thin case PG,and many parts and vintage Firestone tires & wheels from 1990. Talked to David in 2013 in Atlanta and he was very intrested in the story.
