Top Ten Iconic Names in Stock and Super Stock

 

Class Racer Magazine puts together the top ten iconic Stock and Super Stock names. As you can see there is one driver that has made the top ten 3 times. Its hard to get away from his impact on the sport. It was tough to get to the top ten, many names are associated with dealerships, which was very popular in the 60’s. These names are also very iconic, but we wanted to list the top ten names that most racers and fans would relate to. Tell us what you think and why, we may have missed some names but we think these are all top ten players.

10: Gold Digger

Jim Boudreau’s Gold Digger. He has used this name on many of his cars, from Super Mod to Super Stock. The name was first used by Jim on his 67 GTO.

9: Check Mate

Tied for number 9 is Mike Keener and Paul Mercure in the Check Mate Camaro’s  and Dan Fletcher in his Dad’s 69 Camaro. Dan’s 69 car is the winingest car in NHRA history. Mike and Paul have been running Check Mate Camaro’s since the late 60’s.

8: Rod Shop

Nationwise sponsored the Gil Kirk Rod Shop race teams out of Columbus Ohio. The Rod Shop found its name on many Mopar’s, from pro’s to sportsman, but they name is most remember in the Stock and Super Stock ranks in the late 60’s 70’s and 80’s

7: Monster Mash

The Monster Mash 1955 210 Chevy sedan was owned by  Bill “spider” Spanakos  built by Bill Jenkins. Jenkins did drive the Monster Mash, but Spider was the main shoe.

6: Cobra Jet

Although Cobra Jet was just a name giving by Ford for there 68 1/2 Mustang 428 package, it became a familiar name in many 428 Mustangs in the late 60’s and 70’s and was resurrected in 2008. Ford showed up at the Winternationals with an underrated 428 for their 68 Mustang. Gas Ronda, Jerry Harvey, Hubert Platt, Don Nicholson, and Al Joniec were sponsored by Ford to race at the Winternationals and they dominated Stock and Super Stock.

5: Ramchargers

In 1960 the Ramchargers were created by  group of engineers from the Chrysler Corporation. By 1963 the  Ramchargers gained national fame with two factory sponsored team cars. The cars were nicknamed, Candymatic, and featured white cars with seven candy-apple red stripes on the top and trunk deck, and of course had the name RAMCHARGERS on car.

4: Old Reliable

Although Old reliable started out on a 1961 409 Biscayne coupe, one of Bill Jenkins favorite cars. The name became iconic after Dave Strickler and Bill Jenkin’s dominant the 1968 NHRA Super Stock season.

3:  California Flash

Butch Leal  “The California Flash” used this iconic name in the mid 1960’s. Butch Leal only had a few shorts years driving in the Super Stock ranks in the mid 1960’s. He then moved on to Funny Cars and then Pro Stock, but the name carries on as one of the most iconic in the sportsman ranks.

2: Sox & Martin

Sox and Martin, a dominating force in the 1960’s in Super Stock. Ronnie Sox and Buddy Martin became house hold names for sportsman racers and fans. Thanks to the promotion genesis of Buddy Martin and the driving skills of Ronnie Sox, the team was well known from coast to coast. The Sox & Martin team also had great success in the Pro Stock ranks in the 1970’s.

1: Grumpy’s Toy

Grumpy’s Toy, its known by every drag racer in the county old and youg. Bill Jenkins had many names for all of the cars he raced and tuned, but none were as memorable as Grumpy’s Toy. Bill Jenkins, nicked name the Grump, has to be one of the most iconic racers that ever went down the 1/4 mile. Grumpy’s Toy is arguably the most iconic name ever to go on the side of a Stock or Super Stock car.
