Default Powerglide Woes

I ordered a new trans in December, it arrived at my house the day after I left for the Winternationals. While running in Pomona, my old trans has developed an issue where it struggles to back up, almost like another gear is applied. Everything else seems to work normally (1st gear, 2nd, trans brake, TB release) Now in Phoenix, would like to get it working right before this next event. Any ideas on what to look at first? Thanks--

I've seen broken reverse pressure plates cause a complaint like yours.
The rear clutches still apply but the broken plate pushes forward against the planetary causing it to drag hard.
The trans brake will still apply and release because the planetary is stationary although it usually is inconstant .
Hard to tell without disassembly .

Could that be a problem that only shows up part-time? At times my car seems to back up normally.

Dropped the pan--some debris in the bottom, rubbery, maybe lip seal material. Be pulling the transmission this afternoon.
