So do you apply the teardown rule to national opens as well?
How many think the 1.20 under trigger should apply to national opens?

After talking to Travis this weekend I know he for one would looooove to see more tear downs but the powers that be aren't feelin' it. When I was running the Caddy FWD Stockers we were torn down all the time. Three times one year by Travis alone! Jim

That was the norm then. Don't know when they stopped doing it but if you raced at Indy in the 70's you were torn down before the race. Every single car in competition went thru pre race teardown .

Now that they have cut back on the quota for the classes at the national events there is not as much money to employ enough trained tech personnel to handle a large amount of tear down. NHRA does have the protest clause in the rule book. If you think someone is not legal you can put up the cash to have them looked at. I really doubt that you would find very many flagrant cheaters out there. some minor infractions might be found but nothing that would be effecting the cars performance by huge amounts. I got torn down at the gators about 15 years ago after winning class. during the tear down they found my intake valve was .001 undersize due to the valve tuliping and bounced me. After I made the corrections and put new valves in the heads the car picked up almost a tenth. So not all infractions are performance enhancing.

Incredible amount of irony in Mike's first sentence.

As someone already stated I wouldn't say it waa necessary at Opens unless setting a record. I just think if someone causes a combination to get home it should be verified.

I remember Indy when ALL class winners went to Paul Harvey Ford for teardown. If someone didn't pass, they'd bring in the runner-up.
1978 Gainesville (no class run-offs), Top 16 Q's were invited to Blount Pontiac for a piston party ..Yes all had a piston out , one way or the other. They did have a few lifts available. I was lucky enough to be no. 15 ;-)

One should remember, there were less categories then. No .90 cars, fast bracket racers.
We were done for the day at 4 p.m....To the dealership by 5 .

I remember the first tear down at Moroso in 1983.
You had to get a local Caddy Technician to help tear down the car.
