I see they kept the cage requirements down to GT/GA even after they changed the weight breaks but state that if you run 9.99 or under a cage must be installed. I figured they had moved it down to GT/KA and never bothered checking.

If my memory serves me correctly ( it usually doesn't ) there were three class's in Super Modified. A was for big blocks with an 850 carb and B & C were small block cars with a 750 carb. I don't remember the weight breaks anymore, but IHRA ran that as a eliminator. I also think you had to use Factory heads and were only allowed porting 1" in on the intake surface an 1" in from the bowl side. For those of you that were involved in Super Modifieds at the time, please refresh my memory.

75' First year on one A/SM . 10.5 lbs/ci

76' A,B,C. A became C at 10.5, B was 9.5 and A was 8.5.lb/ci

Changed again when modified eliminator was shut down in 1981

Today, there is A thru I/SM in Comp and is entirely different.

However, modified stock is similar to the old SM rules ex.SS/AS is 8.5 with 1 carb.

If you go back to the very beginning, Rick Voegelin from Car Craft made the original proposal. It was just the one class (for iron wedge heads, 750 carb, 10.5 tire) and was intended to be a stand alone heads up Jr Pro Stock sort of deal. When it actually got accepted by NHRA, it was just a class added to Modified Elim (not a separate eliminator). Fairly quickly after that, it expanded into 3 classes.

Due to the dominance of the Ford Cleveland engine powered cars, they had to revamp the class.

The old class resembles more the current SS/Modified Stock classes than Comp Eliminator Super Modified.

Yes, I know, but there are cars out there that have them.
That was my gripe with some rules and builds that have been showing up that skirt the rules.

If they weren't out there why the need to be rewriting (change the language) of the rules?.
