Default No Brakes

2005 Silverado 3500 dually. The power brakes and power steering are not working. Is the pump bad or the brake booster? Any one else had a similar problem?

Mike, I've seen quite a few power steering pump shafts twist off, the pulley may still be there. Try pulling forward on the pulley, if it moves forward the shaft is broken. If it does not then you need to have the system tested for power steering pressure, most shops have the correct tools to perform this test. Hope this helps. Joe Buchanan

Not sure if yours is the same, but my 84 1 ton has a thing by firewall ( bolts to the master cylinder ) that runs the power brakes and power steering. I think it's called a hydro-booster when it goes so go the brakes and steering. Hope this helps..........

Went and looked at my tk it bolts to the firewall then the master cylinder bolts to it .

Every time I have encountered this problem it has been the pump. I have done probably 6 pumps in 2 years.

In 2000 , GM had a campaign for the power steering pump shaft. It was fixed for 2001, The power steering pump is the fluid and pressure source for the Hydra-boost system.

Just finished a 2000 K3500 with the same problem. If you have no pump noise or mixing of the fluid in the power steering pump then the problem is the pump.I removed the pump and the shaft was broke.I replaced the pump and I now have steering and power brakes again.

The pumps are a problem on these trucks not uncommon as others have posted to have them break the shaft. It is a good idea to flush the lines real good after replacing the pump in case there are metal fragments in them you dont want them to ruin the new pump or the hydrobooster.

Thanks for all of the responses. The brakes and steering started to work again on their own. I am just waiting for it to happen again so I can tell what the problem is.

I have a 2500 HD. I had power steering fluid leaking every time I parked it. The dealer repaced the pump. Still had a leak and they replaced all the hoses. Still had the leak and they "finally" dicovered it was the hydrobooster leaking at the seal on the firewall. I had to pay for that one cause the warranty had run out.
One good thing, the driver side carpet will never rust.
