Re: June 7, 1968 Class records
The Stock stick records show Robert Glidden in B/SA. That is a misprint as Bob's 1965 427 Ford Galaxie was a 4-speed.
Just setting the "record" straight...but most of you have already figured that out. |

Jay Kalmus E/MP.....12.57
I believe I was there with him when we set that record at York '57 Chevy Wagon....301.... I traveled with him to a number of races that year. A good friend.....He passed away many years ago...

I use to buy restoration parts for my '56 from Jay at the swap meets. Probably still have his card somewhere. |

Jay was a great guy and good friend who had a lot to do with me ever getting involved in drag racing. He was a mailman and I saw him every day for years. Post office was next to a gas station I worked at. He had a number of cars, race and street. He had a '57 Nomad we towed with back in the mid 1960's He was very good friends with Tony Feil who recently passed. Tony raced Jays '57 Wagon when Jay was activated in the Army. Jay bought one of Tony's Camaros and raced E and F/MP 1970-1971... After he quit drag racing he had that nomad done up as a show car and that's how he got started selling resto parts long before the companies out there today. Cancer got him many years ago.....Last time I saw him was at the Etown Swap meet, he was selling parts and was still very upbeat as usual inspite of his battle with cancer......We had some great fun going all the way back to 1966

Re: June 7, 1968 Class records
I see Baltimore listed as one of the places a record was set. They must have Capitol, or Aquosco, listed as Baltimore. I see George Cureton (with the Tokyo Rose,) listed on there. The first time I ever attended a drag race was March of 68, at Capitol. Great stuff.

Re: June 7, 1968 Class records
Several Pontiacs on that list. But I won't mention all of 'em.
Will post pics of the C/SA & I/SA Pontiacs. Will also ask a question about the G/SA '65 Pontiac. Haven't seen any pics of a '65 GTO running a class that low. In most of the pics I've seen, they're usually running B or C. Another thing is that back then only the 2-speed Super Turbine 300 trans was legal in a '65 GTO. Guessing that VERY few tried to race one, in serious competition. Wondering if this was a big Pontiac, maybe a 421 Tri-power Cat ? The name was Mosley, from Ocala Florida. Anybody know the car ? The pic of Joe Perzan, shows the '60 wagon in E/SA. He had also set a record in that class. But I assume that I/SA record was made with the same car, just either with a different engine or in a different year, when it was classified different. Noticed that back in the early years, the GTO's would run in B & C Stock. Then later on, they dropped down a few classes. My 366hp '69 GTO ran in D/S, in '73 & '74. I've seen pics of '69 Judge models that had E/S on the windows. Last edited by oldskool; 08-28-2021 at 07:09 PM. |
