Without the 'bogus' combos, some of us would never attempt to build a car because it would seem impossible to compete.

Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
Ya know, I really have to ask, how is this combo bogus? It's got an intake port that wants me to try and find someone that can make it smaller and an exhaust port that's not all that good. It's got a big camshaft and big valves but such low compression that you can't really put a "big" cam in it. All but the 74 can only use the small Motorcraft 4350 carb(700 cfm?). It's got a short stroke(relative to the size) and the rotating mass is probably the heaviest of any big block. I can think of a couple of 455 Buicks and Pontiacs that look better on paper. Not to mention that they come in cars that look like the box that my Grand Prix came in and IT'S a box! It must be because they're such a well kept secret that FFFord guys don't even know about them(or choose to not know).

Being a "big guy" and having only raced a Impala one thing I do appreciate running a big car is the leg room up front I had with the bench seat too, made sitting in staging lanes more comfortable!

^^ agree From previous experience with my mid 70's 460s, these are my observations: The exhaust ports in stock form on those D3 heads are horrible. If you are lucky and find some D3 heads without the A.I.R. injection holes, then grab them. Those bumps in the runner really hurt exhaust flow. The intake ports in my opinion are way too big. Port velocity is lowered because they are so big. That 320 factored hp seems a bit high to me. ( considering the valve lift specs and poor exhaust) Good luck on the LTD build.

If you need an intake I'm doing a junkyard run tomorrow.

Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
Why? Because it's not a sbc camaro!
I love the odd balls, barges are cool! Stationwagons were what your dad drove (before minivans) and were un-cool until they got popular on the strip. Heck, a caddy or lincoln for a racecar? Who'd a thunk it? Friend had a new 76 grand marquis/460 when I was a kid and took me for a drive. Stopped and torqued it up then floored it. Shoved me back in the seat and held me there until he let off at 120mph. I fell in love with it right then, I was 12 or so. Looking back it probably took a mile or two, but it was awesome at the time. I'd love to see a lot more of these built, not just 70's merc's, but like a 76 imperial with a 440 or whatever. Another car I love the look of is a 76 caprice 2 door. Good luck on the build and yes all ford exh ports suck, just some worse than others. |

Re: 77/78 ford ltd/ mercury marquis 460
Would the 74 460 @300 hp same cam, a little bigger valves, more compression be a better combo?
