Default 2015 Banquet Highlights

On February 6th, the All Star Racing Association celebrated the conclusion of their 24th season with over 90 guests gathering at the Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside Hotel in Portsmouth, NH. The season’s top performers were recognized with plenty of laughter and cheer making for a grand occasion.

Once dinner and dessert was enjoyed by all, it was time to move into the awards presentation. Prior to handing out any hardware, the time was taken to recognize and thank all the great sponsors that support the ASRA and allow the association to offer a great payout and a great banquet. Not enough can ever be said on how much the support of each and every sponsor is appreciated. The hosting tracks were also thanked for providing the venues for which the ASRA can play. Wayne Delmonte crowned Mark Markow the Lebanon Valley Dragway track champion and Joe Lombardo provided awards to John Gray and Mark Markow as the New England Dragway Co-Champions.

The specialty awards, which are voted upon by the members of the association, were handed out. Pete Foster, a first time member of the All Stars, took home the best appearing award with his beautiful 67 Camaro that runs F/SA. Mark Markow took home the Peter O’ Moran Sportsman of the Year award with his wife Stephanie taking home the Support Person of the Year honors in suiting fashion.

The night contained two special moments. The first being the induction of the second member into the ASRA Hall of Fame. Bob Broadbent was awarded the honor of joining the only other inductee Dave Lebrun (his longtime “partner in crime”). Bob shared some history on how he got involved with drag racing, the success he has had, and concluded on how he could never dream of receiving the designation of being in a hall of fame. An honor Bob is very deserving of and nicely complimented with a standing ovation.

The night moved from one emotional moment to another as it was announced that Dave Casey was stepping down from the Board of Directors after being a long time contributor. He has been present from the start in 1982 only stepping away for a few years in the middle. Dave has been a key contributor in the success of the ASRA and was recognized for those efforts with a standing ovation of his own. Dave addressed the crowd by saying that it was a very rewarding experience and that it was just time to take a responsibility off of his plate. He looks forward to putting his full focus back on driving and winning races and less on worrying about making sure a race would go off without a hitch.

Individual race winners were recognized with the only hardware being awarded to Mark Markow as he was the only member to see the winner’s circle in 2015. Mark won race #3 at NED, and races #4 and #6 at LVD and added the frosting to the cake by taking home the shoot-out title as well. A quick moment was taken for the night’s raffles with Tim Stickles winning the membership raffle and Linda Serbst taking home the 50/50. The ceremony moved on by presenting each of the top 10 finishers in the Banks Championship Points with a plaque once again provided by John Gray. At this point in time, Mark Markow made his last of numerous trips to the center stage to take the podium as the 2015 ASRA Champion. Mark gave special thanks to all the sponsors, the board of directors, tracks, and fellow members for providing a great venue for racing. He paid special tribute to his family for their long time support. Mark also singled out some key friends that provided him important help and guidance throughout his racing career. His speech concluded with the request to get the party going and the night moved into its dancing and friendly conversations amongst the racing family.

Special thanks again to all the sponsors that graciously supported the association, the members that came out for the night, and all who donated door prizes.
