Default Fairmont (Eldora) Dragway in Fairmont WV

Some of you may have been there. It closed in 2000. From 1995 to 1999, it hosted a Tri-State S/SS Association race every year. It was a down-home 1/8 mile track. Though I have heard that, years ago, it was a 1/4 mile track. Dad went there once in 1973, and it was 1/8 by then. Does anyone have any knowledge if it indeed was a 1/4 mile track at one point? The shutdown area had to be AWFULLY short if it was ever a 1/4. Thanks.

I've got a copy of that racetrack reference book by Allan Brown...1994 edition. Lists Eldora as an 1/8th-mile track that opened around 1970....

Maybe "dragstrip guru" Brent Kepner has additional info?

Hi Jeff. Yep, I plan on going. My first time there in about nine years. Always had work and/or bad weather on the date they had it. Unless something comes up, I'll be there.

When did this drag strip close or is it still in operation?

One of the guys from the Pittsburgh area had an old decal that he wanted reproduced from Eldora

Thanks Jimbo

I think it closed in 2000 sometime. We did a S/SS race each year there from 1995 to 1999. 2000 we didn't have one. In December 2001, we stopped by on the way home from a race in Orlando FL. Took a few pics of the place. Weeds grown up several feet high, rubber almost totally peeled off the track surface, etc.

I raced there a lot in the 1970s. They did have it listed as 1/4 mile before then, but the track was something like 15' short and they had to change it to 1000 ft. John Book ran it and still has scrapbooks on the cars that ran there.
