Default Slick sizes for stock

I put Hoosier 29” tires on my car and it was a close fit. I made some easy check out passes and the tires rubbed the paint on the inside fender lip. (They’re rolled some but maintain stock outward appearance)
At only 116mph the tires grew enough to make contact but it didn’t get too hot to damage the paint on the outside edge. I’m worried a full pass will damage the paint so I ordered a smaller 28” bias tire that clears easily and won’t rub.
Am I giving up ET with the small tire?
Hoosier makes a 30” radial (that specs around 29.5” tall) I’ve read that the radials don’t grow but I would be squeezing it in. I assume the radials would be a little quicker but is there a chance on some growth or getting a set thats taller than the listed height of 29.5”?
(The new tires actually measure a little under 28”).
Thanks

You need to go to work on those wheel wells so that you can run a 30 x 9 ….. talk to some mustang guys …. also , find out what wheel offset they run ….

Most of the 60’s Mustang guys are cutting the front side of the wheel opening and adding a new wheel lip to look stock. (I did that on my super street car) This car I wanted to keep as stock as possible for re-sale if someone wants to return it to the street. I did use a BFH before body work and paint to massage the opening and clearance the inner wheel wells. I have 5” back spacing on the centerline wheels that cleared everything until I put the Cal Trac leafs on which are a little wider than stock. (Needs a .250 spacer now)

I can run the 30x9 radials but didn’t want to spend the money on them without some comments if they truly are no growth?
The smaller tires get me out to the track for TnT purposes so I can sort out the car. I may be stuck with them so I would be curious how much ET I might be giving up.

If you are truly serious about Stock eliminator you need to run the 30 x 9 radial. Your competitors are !!! That 92 or 94 inch radial is a crucial part of the combination which includes rear gear and first gear trans ratio. Perhaps you could find a set of used ones to try ? My personal opinion is that the radial will not grow going down the track …

I know radials are quicker, but why?

More tire pressure, less rolling resistance.

Aluminum baseball bat between tire and quarter panel. Worked good on 85 Camaro

The 28’s got me down the track without rubbing. In the heat it went .400 under the B index on its first full pass. The best run was a 10.76 almost .500 under but I don’t know where my weight is at. That’s the next item to take care of. I know it’s not as light as allowed in A it should be somewhere between A and B weight.
I need to pick up the 60ft times (1.45) with it a little soft on the 2step. How do the radials compare in 60ft times?

I'm reading this and I'm thinking that maybe the tire I run on my S/ST car could be a solution. It is a Hoosier Drag Bracket Radial, 28 x 9. Before I ran this tire, I ran the 30 x 9 radials for 20+ years. I didn't notice any ET change when changing to the shorter tire, although that will depend on each combination relative to how it is geared.

Now, this tire is advertised as having a 9.5" tread width which probably makes it a no-no. I went out in the garage to measure my spare set of wheels with a traditional Stocker 30 x 9 radial on them, and the tread width is 9.375".

The rulebook doesn't exactly clear this up by implying that a tire up to 10" wide may be acceptable if the extra width is due to wear:

Street-type or drag slick tires, maximum 9-inch tread width.
Tires may not be altered from tire manufacturer?s original design
or pattern. Size of tire (new) must not exceed 9-inch wide x 30-
inch diameter (94-inch circumference). Tires may not exceed
10 inches wide regardless of wear.

The thread below might shed some light on what Tony is talking about. Then a highlighted description of a Factory Stock Radial Slick.
