Before you pull it out, hook the modulator up.

Already tried that, made the problem worse. . I was hoping to learn a little on being able to diagnose these things but i guess this one is remove & perform exploratory surgery.

go over to my core pile, pull out another trans that at least looks like a c4 & start tearing it down. Looks to be in decent shape but the valve body has a casting bolted on where the filter should be & a whole different filter. It also has "fine" threaded band adjuster's. But the rest looks pretty standard c4. Can I use this ? I saw an E2 part # on it also.

You've got a C5 there. I know things like the Transgo valve body kits worked in late C4 and C5, so I'd guess the valve body would work. I know a C4 valve body can go into it. Some of those C5 parts are improvements over the earlier stuff, like the case had some improved oil passages. The C5 bellhousing is deeper for the lockup converter, so you'll need to use the C4 bellhousing.

The C5 is a better way to go, just make sure you set the front band to 3 turns, not 1 1/2. 70 and up C4 valve bodies fit.

Found the problem's. The forward planetary was destroyed. Metals shavings ALL thru the valve body enough so that only a few valves moved. Thank you ALL for the help. I learned from you.
