Honoring Jimmy Waibel
I know I am asking a lot of a bunch of race car drivers to keep a secret, but treat this like you are hiding illegal parts in your car from TECH officals !!!! (not that ya'll would do that) wink wink wink.....
For those of you who have been either around this long, or those of you that just keep up with things like this... 2008 will mark 50 years of Waibel Competition... Now with Waibel Competition comes ( yep you guessed it ) Jimmy Waibel.. Many of you know him from the times he beat you on the track, some of you know him from just watching him race, and some of you know him cause he helped you win by building your engines. None the less you all know him. So... We have come up with a plan of racing vengence per say. Those of you who will be at the Division 2 race in Bradenton 2008, we will be planning a roast with the legendary Jimmy as the guest of (dis)honor...lol All jokes aside.... for those of you who are VERY interested in being a roster send your best story of you and Jimmy so that we might sort through them all since we dont want to be there ALL night... (you do have a race the next day ya know.. and the "old guys" have to be in bed by 11.... LOL) Even if you are not interested in being a roster, but you have a great story, post it and we will use it for the book. It is not going to be a published book, just a compilation. I think it would be neat to read all the things that used to go on back then... Those stories that are sent will be compiled into a book to be handed out at the event. Please let us know if you are interested in helping... Thanks to all in advance and we are looking VERY VERY forward to this event. Last edited by FlyingW; 07-24-2007 at 06:16 PM. |

Re: ATTENTION!!!! Shhh!!!!
Back in about 1963, give or take a couple of years. I was a a points race somwhere.... maybe Lakeland at Memphis, maybe Opeloussas, LA (sp.?), maybe somewhere else, but I had heard that the already legendary Jimmy Waibel was going to be there. I got there about 11:00 a.m., and started looking for this vaunted '57 Chevy from Florida. I think it was a 4-speed 270 HP 283, and was probably the record-holder at that time. It usually was...
I found it up on some jack-stands with the rear axles pulled out and lying on the ground. They were painted with a straight white stripe about an eighth-of-an-inch wide, from the spline to the outer bearing area. I got closer and could see that this straight white stripe wasn't exactly straight any more; it more or less resembled the stripes on a barber pole... I was amazed, never having thought much about axle twist, but there it was... Jimmy was keeping tabs on the longivity of the "twisted" axles. I thought, "Boy, do I have a lot to learn...." Those '57 Chevy rear ends and axles weren't exactly bulletproof... Gee, that was only about 44 years ago.... man... Jimmy was always either setting a record or holding one, and was one of my early "heroes." Ask him if he remembers the T.G. Lee, (dairy) dragster, or "The Mad Medic". Bet he'll have some stories to tell about that '56 Chevy Gasser... Jerry somebody... I finally got to see his '57 make a pass, later that day, and it was story-book beautiful... Some things you just never forget. Thanks for the memories, Jimmy... Bill, in Conway, Arkansas

Re: ATTENTION!!!! Shhh!!!!
Thanks Bill -
We will be sure to put your story in the book. I think it is neat to hear things like that about my dad especially since it sounds like he was one that helped you in your love for racing. To all others please make sure you place your stories here.. I know that it will be neat for Jimmy to see all of them, and to remind him of "the good old days" Thanks again. |

Re: ATTENTION!!!! Shhh!!!!
So we have decided to move the event to Orlando race. We will be sending out updates as we have them. As of right now we are going to do this in the pit area after the track is cold. Just to keep everyone up to date.
