Default 1970 1/2 - 1971 Camaro rear spoiler?

Can someone tell me which one is legal?
Was looking at one Saturday and it had the Firebird spoiler installed with the rounded qtr panel end caps. I only recall the trunk mounted duckbill style and then the straight blade type which retained the same straight edge being longer on the qtr panel. The owner said they used Pontiac parts on the Z-28's. ??? Don't want to buy any more stuff that needs to be fixed.
Thanks

I would put the trunk lid spoiler on. I think the larger spoiler came out in 1971.

The larger spoiler was an option, was built to use in the Trans Am series, in 1970. The short spoiler was known to produce lift, something like -200 of downforce, at high speeds on the road courses, Taller 3 piece spoiler produces something like 600? pounds of downforce. I would think both are legal, along with no spoiler since both were options.

The Nasty Z site quotes the three piece as a COPO option for 1970 although there were not many installed at the dealers.

Thanks guys, interesting information there.

This is what I recall, the deck lid model.

The spoiler on this Camaro is this Pontiac Trans Am one with the rounded end caps. I have never seen a Camaro with the TA rear spoiler on it from the factory.

I thought the "blade" model was Camaro only.

If you could run a front spoiler and have no rear spoiler, I would think that would be preferred for a stocker.

Bobby; while I can only offer my opinion, I've had quite a few of these cars and have learned a thing or two about them over the years. I've never heard of a 2nd Gen Camaro that ever had the Firebird rounded 3 piece rear spoiler factory installed. The only spoiler that should be on there is either the low 1 piece or the straight edged 3 piece that you've mentioned.

I suspect that the car you're looking at had the wrong spoiler installed by a previous owner, or by the dealership at a customer's request, and the story you were told by the current owner was dreamed up to "legitimize" it. If you do buy that car and don't change it to a Camaro spoiler be prepared to be debating it being there with every Camaro guy that sees it! LOL

Coupla things !!!!
first---the RPO D80 rear spoiler for 1970 Camaro is the low version-- unless you have either a COPO 9796 car or one of a very few cars built in late spring for racers

second ----COPO 9796 rear spoilers are the 3 piece high spoilers as used on 1971 cars

third ---the COPO 9796 spoiler used the inside Firebird piece with SPECIAL end pieces fabricated to fit the Camaro

fourth ---for 1971 until the supply of low spoilers was used up some 71 cars may have been equipped with 70 spoilers but most were equipped with the new high spoiler when RPO D80 was selected
fifth----using the low profile spoiler actually increases lift at the rear of the vehicle (like 120 pounds) VS. about 280 pounds of down force on the high profile spoiler

I had to read your post a couple of times before I saw that basically you said what I said....the rounded Firebird end caps were not used on a Camaro. The center piece of the spoiler is the same whether it was used on the Camaro or the Firebird. I never mentioned that because I figured Bobby was more interested in whether the rounded ends were correct on Camaros.

And you're right about the low spoiler also being installed on early '71s. I had an early '71 Z/28 with the low spoiler, as well as two later '71s with the 3 piece spoiler.
