Default Gary Kerl takes the field by storm at TNT Super Series opener

Awesome turnout to begin third season!

LANCASTER, NEW YORK (May 11, 2009) The 2009 season for the Joe's Transmission TNT Super Series kicked off in fine form last Friday night at Dunn Tire Raceway Park (DTRP). A 30% chance of thunderstorms didn't stop twenty-three of the best sportsman competitors from coming out to the NOCO Energy presented event. And when the dust settled, it was Gary Kerl from Williamsville, New York in the DTRP Winner's Circle.

Gary and his 1968 Chevrolet Camaro held off Jamie Stoneman's (Cheektowaga, NY) hard-charging 1993 Chevrolet S10 in the final round. And even though the race was all over when Jamie red-lighted, Gary ran it out out the back door to a 7.010 ET. Couple that with his near perfect .501 reaction and this would have been a tough package to beat. Jamie was no slouch either running an almost perfect 7.005 ET but would have needed a .505 or better reaction time to win that round. On his way to the bye run in the semi-finals, Gary met up with Steve McCarrick (Phelps NY), Kirk Parry (North Tonawanda NY) and Jason Vitez (Elma NY). The rounds didn't come easy for Gary though as he had to overcome starting line disadvantages in both the first and third rounds.

Gary wanted to thank his wife Carolyn for her support and especially his son Jeff who did all the car prep this year and is with him at every race. "Jeff makes things go pretty easy and allows me to concentrate on the racing that seems to get more difficult every year," commented Gary. In fact, Jeff is currently sitting second in the points in the no-box class at DTRP driving the very same car. "As everyone knows, the competitors in this hot rod series of races here at Dunn Tire Raceway Park and in Canada are second to none," he added. Gary was quick to thank his sponsors and supporters, especially Greg Kerl Automotive and Casey's Tavern. "Greg has continued to offer tips in preparing the car and also was at this particular race providing needed support."

But what really made this night a memorable one for Gary was having his five year old grandson there for the win. "Having the luck to win the first race of the year is great, but when all is said and done, having my grandson Connor there cheering me on provided an extra boost of fun and excitement," added Gary.

Gary's Camaro is an original 350 SS four-speed car. Currently powered by a Shafiroff 434 cid small block, it's backed up by a 5000 stall converter and powerglide transmission. The car is all steel (except for the hood), weighs 3200 pounds and will run low 10's all out in the 1/4 mile.

Receiving the $50 Hoosier Tire Canada certificate for qualifying number one was Jan Winkowski (Cheektowaga NY) with a 7.002 pass. Jan also received a NOCO prize package including a $50 NOCO gift card. The J&S Collision Closest to the Index - First Round Loser Award of $50 cash went to Fred Gross for his 7.053 and the DTRP Best Reaction Time - First Round Loser Award - a Free Top ET Racer Pass - went to Mark Glomb for his .509 light.

"This is the first event where we've had some of these specialty awards," commented Ted Barnes, TNT Series Director. "I mean, to lose with a .509 light is heart-breaking. At least there is something for their efforts." On this particular night, the series paid out over 110% of racer entry fees and gave away tons of other prizes. "The folks from NOCO Energy gave us a bunch of goodies for all the racers including cooler bags with $50 NOCO gift cards for winner, runnerup and number one qualifier," added Ted.

Next stop on the 2009 Joe's Transmission TNT Super Series is a double-header event at the Victoria Day Weekend Challenge on May 16-17 at Cayuga Dragway at Toronto Motorsports Park. Gates will open at 9am on Saturday with eliminations at 1pm on both days. Visit http://www.torontomotorsportspark.com for full details.
